Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Red Cross is taking cash donations for the catastrophe in Haiti.
Becky Rowe of the local Red Cross, says a  senior Red Cross staff member who will make an initial assessment of needs in the earthquake ravaged nation.
Haiti is the poorest nation in the west, and was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. The capital of Port au Prince, was flattened by the quake and early estimates say three million people were affected by the   quake.
Rowe says the first phase of response is to provide the basic human needs of food, clean drinking water, medical aid, and shelter. “Once that has been dealt with, the Red Cross will help look at the long term needs.”
The Prince George Red Cross office is expecting to be open on Saturday to accept donations, their office is at 1399 – 6th Avenue. You can also visit their website at www.redcross.ca/helpnow, or call them at 1-800-418-1111.

Not to belittle the catastrophe in Haiti but shouldn't charity start at home? There are a lot of people in this country that could use the help.
What an utterly low class comment.
What's low class about it? Is it really that much easier for you to send aid to ease pain and suffering in a foreign country then it is to give help to people in your own communities? Why?
The people in our community have choices, there are shelters, food banks, and community kitchens. The people of Haiti have nothing, nothing, not even water, never mind food. I suppose if we had a disaster of the same magnitude your opinion would be the same.

And yes I do help the people in my community.
I agree with Jayda, there are lots of options for the people here. However we do have social issues that need to be raised and resolved. This doesn't mean that we can't assist in aiding the poorest country in the west while they go through a horrible disaster.
