The mild weather over the holidays may have been a treat for some, but the big dump of snowfall has created a nasty and potentially hazardous situation.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) has issued a special avalanche warning that will last through the weekend.
The warning applies to the Interior mountain ranges in the province, from the Pine Pass all the way to the U.S. border. The Centre says there is a considerabe danger of avalanche in the alpine and tree line areas because of the recent weather.
“We had a fairly warm wet and miserable first couple of days of the holiday season for backcountry activities. Now that the weather is more appropriate for winter sports there is a lot of pent-up demand to get out into the hills” said Ilya Storm, an avalanche forecaster at the Canadian Avalanche Centre. “However, the snowpack is quite complicated and there are spots where there is a weak layer of snow beneath the recent storm snow. It will take a great deal of skill and knowledge of the season’s previous weather and local avalanche activity to be able to know where the snowpack is safe.”
Storm offers some advice "Stick to terrain that is less than 30 degrees steep, don’t stop where you are exposed to danger from above, let your stuck
buddy dig their own machine out while you watch from a safe spot. If you approach the mountains with some caution there is every reason to think that you will have a safe trip.”
