Prince George, B.C.- It has been nearly a year since  a Councilor for the City of Prince George requested  to be allowed to attend a Council meeting "electronically".   Tonight,  Council dealt with two more such requests.

One is from Councilor Cameron Stolz who will not be able to attend  the February 1st meeting in person as he has to be in Toronto on a buying trip for  his  business.  The other request is from Councilor Garth Frizzell who  would like to attend the  February 10th budget meeting electronically because he  has to be out of town  attending a Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting.

Both requests have been approved.

Surely, we can do this.

Maybe our city council should look at skype.
Speaking of which, was I hearing wrong when about a year ago I thought I had heard that council will have live streaming on the internet?

Here is NOLA's streaming City Council's page

The technology for this has been around for years now. It's called Skype and computer-to-computer it's a free service. It wouldn't be simply over the phone, they could actually see the Council meeting and the Councilor's in turn could see them via webcams.

The quality is likely even better than what Shaw broadcasts to the city residents.

That said, I do believe that there would need to be a low limit of how many meetings one can miss per year. If you are too busy in your place of business then you are too busy to be a proper city Councilor.
Just like our Federal government. I want to get paid but not show up to actually work. All this while the rest of us poor working stiff goes to work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day or more.
Telecommuting is a perfectly acceptable means of attending a meeting. Many employers are adopting this method where it is logistically reasonable. Some employers are unable to take advantage of this technology because of the nature of their business. I am glad that the requests were approved.
Seriously? This hardly even worth mentioning. Teleconferencing is standard practice.
