Kitimat, B.C.- Today is an important one for the workers at Eurocan in Kitimat.
For the past two weeks, the mill has been the subject of a feasibility study by Poyry, a global consulting and engineering firm focusing on the energy, forest industry and infrastructure & environment sectors.
Later this morning, the consultants will have a sit down with the CEP local 298 and give them a briefing on the mill’s future possibilities.
The mill is slated for closure, and today is expected to be the last full day of production. That means, the last order of paper will come off the line January 28th.
After that, the preparation for the shut down of the mill will continue, as the steam and heating systems will have to be properly closed off.
It is likely the hourly workforce will have put in their final hours by the 17th of February, and the majority of the mill’s employees will finish their employment by the end of February.
If there is no alternative use, or new owner found for the mill, more than 535 employees will be out of a job by the end of next month.
