Prince George, B.C.- The news release from the Provincial Ministry of healthy Living and Sport, would have you believe athletes from all over the world are bunking into small communities throughout the province to train for the upcoming Olympic games.

Here’s the release:

“Communities throughout the province are already welcoming the world to British Columbia as they play host to Olympic and Paralympic teams training for the 2010 Games.

"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games and communities are already seeing the benefits with the influx of international athletes, coaches and training staff into the province," said Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil.

"They are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into local economies and giving British Columbians the chance to get up close and personal with the best athletes in the world."

From Dawson Creek to Penticton, from the Comox Valley to Kamloops, communities are welcoming athletes from around the world to their towns  and cities. Teams from more than 21 different countries are taking advantage of B.C.'s first-class sport venues, facilities and training centres.”

Well, it’s true, there are plenty of athletes training throughout the lower mainland and in the Kootenays, but there is just one team doing anything north of Kamloops.

The Canadian Womens hockey team is doing some training in Dawson Creek. Last time we checked, the Canadian Women’s hockey team was based in Canada, so   while their calibre of play is high, and they do play teams from other countries, the team itself isn’t from another country nor is it likely  this one team would be “pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars” into Dawson Creek’s local economy.

As for “Train In P.G.”, launched at the last Winter Olympics to encourage teams to come to Prince George to train for the 2010 games, the web site is still active www.traininpg.com. According to the website, that ice oval building and artificial ice surface are still slated to be “under construction in 2006.”

It's good to see that we here in PG are getting our money's worth from Initiatives Prince George.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic.
Most of us did not believe a single word that was told or promised about the Olympics. The price tag was a bunch of bull so why not everything else? So really we are not disappointed, at least I'm not. All we can hope for now is that it is a roaring success, the elite spend all their money and we are not paying for this fiasco for 25 years. Cheers!
Olympic costs to date, some where between $1.5 billion and $4.338 billion. The scary part of this is that no one knows how much has been or will be spent.

"They are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into local economies and giving British Columbian's the chance to get up close and personal with the best athletes in the world."

The return is not even a single percentage point.
IPG doesn't have to account for any of their actions do they!?
Why would the athletes train far away from the lower mainland when there are plenty of facilities down there? So what? The sole purpose of this 'article' is to draw yet more negative comments towards the Olympics. Yawwwwn.
"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games and communities are already seeing the benefits with the influx of international athletes, coaches and training staff into the province," said Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil.

Hmm...everyone? Really? I am not feeling any excitement. Nor am I seeing the benefits. Perhaps the Minister could elaborate on what these benefits are or better still, be specific as to which communities she is referring to.

Of course the people are welcoming the athletes et al. We are a cordial bunch. The press release is great spin. A gold star should be awarded to the spin-doctor. Perhaps, the author can assist the unemployed and displaced with their resumes?
The elite will spend and figure a way to deduct it off of their income tax (less revenue for the gov't)---Us po folk will end up payin for 25+ years. How do you like it so far. VANOC and IOC,SHUVIT where the sun don't shine. I can do just fine without it.
It dont make any sense to trian outside of Vancouver area .... exept perhaps in Calgary ... Its relitivly close ... its high altitude (in comparison to Vancouver)

Calgary has all the facilities in place from the 1988 winter olympics

Mr.pg, Did they not use the Olympic excuse to build the northern sports center up at UNBC.
Were they not going to have athletes training here. At least that's what I remember when good old Colin Kinsley was in.I'm asking you, because you seem to Know It All.
MrPg,

The athletes should not train far away from Vancouver. That does not change the fact that the powers that be said they would though, does it?

"The sole purpose of this 'article' is to draw yet more negative comments towards the Olympics."

Funny I did not read or get that out of this article. No where that I can see did it require negative comments. It is what it is! There is nothing untrue or misleading either?? This is exactly what was said and by who said it. Can you please explain this part of your post to us?
I'd love to find something positive to say about the Olympics and I'd love to read an article written by someone outside VANOC or the government that is positive, yet actually truthful. Unfortunately, I'm having a tough time doing either. I think I'll go downtown and see if any of the athletes that are done training for the day want to chat or go for a drink.
Municca, not that I have to explain myself to you or anyone else, but please read the comments in this article and tell me if you think they are positive or negative towards the Olympics? If your mind isn't made up, give the article another day or two and check back.

This kind of release is exactly what you'd expect from a promotional press release. If you're expecting VANOC to put out some sort of doom and gloom (like many of the constant comments on here), I would suggest you don't hold your breath.
Thank you MrPG and sorry that you felt I was making you explain yourself. I see this article as a topic of discussion. There are always two sides to every thing in life. Many, many people feel the Olympics were wrong and likewise many people think it was right. There is always going to be this on any issue. Only time will tell which group was right. Maybe you should avoid these kinds of topics in the future if you can not stomach anyone who posts opposite to your beliefs. This is just a suggestion due to your yawn. The rest of us enjoy seeing what others feel about different topics. The hard part about an opinion forum is accepting how they feel without insults or derogatory comments about everything down to spelling.
I apologize as well for not following the old mob mentality. I also apologize to all the overly sensitive people out there who don't like what I have to say.
Nah, on second thought, I take it back.

:)
I did hear that there were some Olympic Skiers training at Powder King in October, November of this year. I beleive that they were Canadian Skiers, who then went to Euope, then Colorodo, and then Southern BC.

Other than that, nothing.
Some of the foreign athletes, I believe the Chinese biathalon team for one, are training at Mt. Washington Ski Resort on Vancouver Island. Think I'll have to agree with Mr. PG, a VANOC promotional press release is hardly going to be negative on anything about the Olympics. Nor objective on what most of us really might be "feeling excited" about ~ like how much all this is going to cost us.
"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games and communities are already seeing the benefits with the influx of international athletes, coaches and training staff into the province," said Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil.

I wish the minister would phone folks before he counts them in on his " Everyone in B.C." crap. I only know of a few who are for the Olympics. Most I talk to think it is a colossal waist of money and will burden our kids for years to come.
Can we wait and pay for the Olympics after we have paid for the PAC and the new police station? Would be fair seeing as how only Vancouver was responsible for voting.
The article points out that what the Provincial government has been putting out in press releases about the Olympics is not always true; as a matter of fact the press release is not correct.
Furthermore when you are talking about training in Prince George, stating that you will have an ice oval constructed in 2006 again is not correct.
That to me says the Olympic media releases are not true and the local train in PG people continue to say something that isn’t true.
You must have spent a lot of time in the corner wearing the pointed cap Mrpg if you can’t figure out why the story should be written. I want to know what’s truth or fiction, do you?
Keep telling the story 0-250, I was happy to read it , even if some people have difficulty understanding it.
??????????I don't get it.
Ron didn't get it either, but that didn't stop him.
"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games and communities are already seeing the benefits with the influx of international athletes, coaches and training staff into the province,"

What, you say? You mean to tell me that not every single person in BC is feeling the excitement? I am outraged!

If people want to direct their outrage towards something meaningful, it should be towards that expensive-looking traininpg website that has garnered no interest from anyone whatsoever.
Oh, we will pay alright and the rich and their puppets, oops I mean politicians, will play. What's new?
Geez! I hope MrPG doesn't jump all over Ben for telling it like it really is.
"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games ..."

I don't feel any excitement whatsoever! What's wrong with me? Is there a cure?

I'll probably feel excited after the games are over and all the hype and disruption that came with them.

Let us hope that everything will go smoothly and then in the future other countries may host mega events of this nature.

If they can afford it.
Denaljo, I call them like I see them. I know that ticks a lot of people off, yourself included.
I don't feel any excitement whatsoever! What's wrong with me? Is there a cure?
Maybe I'll go and get a H1N1 shot.
Hammy,I got my H1N1 shot and I still don't feel it has me feel more excitement.

Well, I am looking forward to watching mainly hockey at the Olympics ---- but I guess I would have also looked forward to that if the Olympics were elsewhere.
MrPG, it is time for you to be quiet! You are starting to annoy me, and probably many more of the posters on here. I don't know who you are, but I would suggest you are from upper level Government. Probably a Liarebal!!
