Prince George, B.C.- The news release from the Provincial Ministry of healthy Living and Sport, would have you believe athletes from all over the world are bunking into small communities throughout the province to train for the upcoming Olympic games.
Here’s the release:
“Communities throughout the province are already welcoming the world to British Columbia as they play host to Olympic and Paralympic teams training for the 2010 Games.
"Everyone in B.C. is feeling the excitement of the 2010 Games and communities are already seeing the benefits with the influx of international athletes, coaches and training staff into the province," said Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC Mary McNeil.
"They are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into local economies and giving British Columbians the chance to get up close and personal with the best athletes in the world."
From Dawson Creek to Penticton, from the Comox Valley to Kamloops, communities are welcoming athletes from around the world to their towns and cities. Teams from more than 21 different countries are taking advantage of B.C.'s first-class sport venues, facilities and training centres.”
Well, it’s true, there are plenty of athletes training throughout the lower mainland and in the Kootenays, but there is just one team doing anything north of Kamloops.
The Canadian Womens hockey team is doing some training in Dawson Creek. Last time we checked, the Canadian Women’s hockey team was based in Canada, so while their calibre of play is high, and they do play teams from other countries, the team itself isn’t from another country nor is it likely this one team would be “pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars” into Dawson Creek’s local economy.
As for “Train In P.G.”, launched at the last Winter Olympics to encourage teams to come to Prince George to train for the 2010 games, the web site is still active www.traininpg.com. According to the website, that ice oval building and artificial ice surface are still slated to be “under construction in 2006.”
