The first torch bearer in Prince George, Brian Kineshanko, holds the Olympic torch high as he starts off from Van Bien School.
Prince George, B.C. – Off and running!! The Olympic torch has arrived in Prince George and the first runner in the relay that will end at Exhibition  Park is Brian Kineshanko.   He says he is representing seniors, as he has had both hips replaced and is hoping his torch run will encourage other seniors to stay active.  Kineshanko says carrying the torch means everything to him, that it is a symbol of  our great country.
About 200 people were on hand to see the lighting of the torch and witness the start of the relay at Van Bien School.
Within 500 yards of the lighting of the torch, protesters carried placards and waved signs protesting the cuts to School District 57 which have put the future of 14 schools in jeopardy.

200 people?
That's it?
Yep PG at it's apethetic best. Kinda don't blame them though....olympics will keep us in the poor house for years to come
Good Grief

200 people arrived to see the first runner, the real party is at Exhibition Park.
200 people ? I wonder why? could it be we see the olympics as one big money pit, our schools being cut and who knows what after this is all over.
We had considered Van Bien but we decided to avoid the protest nonsense. We chose an alternate location so that we could see the relay. Many others chose to do the same.
The buses had plenty of passengers too! I am sure thousands witnessed the relay en route and many more are enjoying the party at CN Center!
Torch run was good. The party at CN Centre was just one big commercial for Bell, Cokr and a bank that I have already forgotten about. Of course the photo op was well attended on our dime. The Big Dick and Invisable Gordo were front and centre of course.
My sentiments exactly, one big mind numbing commercial! I did enjoy the local performers and athletes who were involved in the production.
The crowd estimate at Exhibition Park was 17,000
Loved every minute of the event - watched the torch bearers carry the flame with pride and I felt proud to be a Canadian. As for the protesters - they were well behaved and few in number. Probably one of the best events I've been to in PG.
