Oh my Gawd thats terrible. What kind of animal would do such a thing. So sick dude was walking down a street and bang he gets hit by a car dead. Geez I will watch out when I leave the house.
probably drove too fast for the icy conditions (and being impared) and did not take the turn inthe road properly. Take his liscence away for a lifetime. One less idiot on the road.
It appears that he was walking on the sidewalk.

Life sentence, no parole for 25 years.
add to that never being able to drive again
not parole ....period....
I'm so sick of drunk drivers! I've been hit 4 differnt times and watched friends burn to death after being hit by a drunk doing over 130km - we couldn't get to them.
There is no excuse for this behavior - we all know there are alternatives. Murder by stupid and drunk behind the wheel is still murder. Give him 15 to 20 years to think about his choice - he didn't care so why should we? Oh, wait a minute - he'll probably cry about it being a medical problem 'cause he's aloholic. So? Alcohol did not force him to drive that was his CHOICE. Blahh... just sick of it!
I heard from a friend that the vehicle came across the median and then left the scene by going across the median again. Sounds like the driver was pretty polluted!
Giv'em a fair trial and hang em or at least a good 15 years in jail to think about it.
No doubt he won't be given the same preferential treatment the cop got when he killed the guy on a bike down in the Lower Mainland, then fled the scene, showing up later, inebriated.
My condolences to the family of the victim.
Until the penalties for drinking and driving actually have some teeth, people will continue to commit the crime. Take away their vehicles, sell them and use the proceeds to help the victims and to fund the penal sysem where these criminals belong. They should never be allowed to drive again.
I don't think that it was that he was drunk that is the major crime here, but rather that he hit a person on the sidewalk, and then choose of his own free will to leave the scene of an accident while someone whom he injured struggled to maintain their life that he choose to disregard.

I say a case like this should be 1st degree murder with no deals by the Crown. Maximum prision sentence, because the death was a choice to flee the scene, and not simply an accident. There is a huge difference between the two and people that have accidents and own up to it and try their best to fix the situtation... should be cut some slack, but to flee the scene is cold blooded murder IMO no matter how drunk the person is.

Hopefully he doesn't get the same local judge that Sullivan got, or we will not see justice....
Eagleone If the driver would have stayed at the scene, would it have been less of a crime to drive drunk and kill someone? Driving drunk should be considered a major crime regardless of the outcome.

My condolences to the family.
If he had stayed at the scene at least he would have demonstrated that he had a tiny bit of concern for the condition of his victim instead of fleeing the scene as if he just run over a garbage can!

A sentence of 15-20 years is not enough punishment as usually only 1/3 of the sentence has to served, meaning 5-7 years.

Throw the book at him: Second degree murder and no time off for ANY reason.

(It won't happen, of course).

A horrible crime, the man should get what he deserves. My condolances to the family.

What I find interesting is that everyone wants to throw the book at him, while we are witnessing a case in which a man can hack away at another person with a machette get a retrial. I think we need to start taking back our judicial system. We are giving so many criminals too many rights.
WE are not the ones giving the criminals too many rights and breaks. It is the powers that be. They don't seem to listen to what the people want. JMHO
Great posts, most people want the guy to
hang or do a number of years in prison.
Well, how about contacting your MP and MLA
and letting them know what you think.
It's tragic and downright disgusting that
some SOB made a stupid choice and hopefully
he/she will face consequences. Unfortunately there's the old last drink
defence and don't be surprised if the person is only ultimately charged under the
Motor Vehicle Act, due to our laws, not a
flawed investigation. Crown down the road
will take a look at the file and decide what charge they can proceed with. The evidence for impaired causing death may not
be there DUE TO OUR LAWS and case law.
It's really frustrating when the person
ends up with a fine.
And think about this. The police arrive on
the scene, they work the investigation, someone has to go to this persons loved one and break the news. That's tough, but
that's what they're paid to do. They've got a lot of compassion, but that doesn't
leave them, they remember, stuff builds up,
then all the blockheads come out kicking some cops butt because he slapped some impaired drive around. They are as human as
the rest of us. Just ask you to think about
it next time you have an encounter with a
cop.
My hearts with the family of this victim, I've been there, nothing can bring that person back, it rips your soul.
Think before you post.
Slim2229, sniffle sniffle, that was, sniffle awesome insight, sniffle.
...and crush the vehicle also. Condolences to the deceased family.
He Spoke:
I feel for you bro, you'rve got some issues....
Actually Slim, I was complimenting your comments.
"......and crush the vehicle also."

No, if it is in good shape give it to a person who needs transportation in order to get a job and make an honest living.
Thats an even better idea Diplomat
In most of the above opinions I note that the gender of the driver is assumed to be male. In todays Citizen birdcage liner/newspaper, it is noted that the driver is a female, and alcohol was involved. Just to add fuel the flames of speculation, what are the chances that the driver and the deceased were related by marriage? From the description of the driver's actions, and the reported fact that the deceased was walking on the sidewalk, it kind of looks like an intentional hit:{
metalman.
There already exists in law the provision for a judge to use a life sentence for impaired causing death or impaired causing serious injury, if there are aggravating factors present at the offence. For those of you who dont know, this criminal code ammendment was successfully spearheaded about 10 years ago by our longtime MP Dick Harris This is a textbook case for that provision..

Too bad there doesn't seem to be a judge in the country who has the balls to use this provision....appears they are all too afraid of an appeal that could overturn their decision....a judges worst nightmare it seems.

This is a huge opportunity for mandatory sentences....except that would drive the liberals and socialists crazy because in their opinion, mandatory sentences are an unfair provision. As well the Defence lawyers would be out in force to stop any move like that becasue it takes cash out of their pockets.

So there you have it....from what I hear, everytime the Tories try to put in tougher penalties for crime, the Opposition do whatever it takes to block it.....

Think maybe this is an example of why we should consider electing a majority next time?

So now I suppose the comments will follow that the world will end with a majority Tory government....and many will be from the very same people who have said to throw the keys away on this impaired driver.....which begs the question...why even bother talking about tougher penalties if you aren't ready to back it up?
Maybe this guy was not only drunk but also on his bloody cell phone.....throw him in the slammer and throw the key away.
What makes you think it is a guy
Each case is judged on it's own merits. Doncha know?
