January Not a Record Breaker, But Mild

Prince George, B.C. -January 2010 will hit the record books as being a mild one, but not a record breaker. In his monthly weather summary, Environment Canada Meteorologist, Jim Steele says January's mean monthly temperature was 4 degrees above normal. Here is his full report:
The only real taste of winter occurred during the first week of the month with the coldest values being recorded, after that it was very mild through the 20th. A bit cooler air settled into the area during the last week but still not even close to the typical late January temperatures.
Precipitation was on the light side with about half the normal snowfall for January. Rainfall was a bit above normal, a reflection of the milder conditions. In the end, the total rainfall and snowfall water equivalent coming in just over half the normal.
Into the record books, it will show a mild and dry January.
Temperatures
- Average daily high of -1.7 was well above the normal of -5.5 degrees C.
- Average daily low of -9.3 was well above the normal of -13.6 degrees C.
- Mean temperature of -5.5 was well above the normal -9.6 degrees C.
- Warmest Day on the 12th with a maximum temperature of 8.3 degrees
- Coldest day on the 5th with an overnight minimum of -30.6 degrees
Precipitation
- Total precipitation of 35.0 mm was below the normal of 52.4 mm.
- Total Snowfall of 28.0 cm was below the normal of 55.8 cm
- Total rainfall of 10.1 mm was above the normal of 6.2 mm
- Measurable precipitation on 11 days below the normal of 15 days
- Greatest snowfall one day 6.0 cm on the 15th
- Greatest rainfall one day 5.1 mm on the 11th

The temperature might be warmer, but feels colder because of the high humidity. Oh well, a bit easier on the gas bill.
Hope we get one more cold spell and one more big dump of snow. This way we will have water for the summer and snow for the olympics.
