Prince George, B.C.- When the “O Zone” opens in the City of Richmond for the Olympics, tourists may get the impression B.C. ends at Quesnel.
The “O Zone” is a free attraction covering 60 acres in Richmond. With an estimated 350,000 tourists descending upon Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond for the Olympics, the “O Zone” includes an attraction called “B.C. Street” where communities can strut their stuff . More than 80 communities from seven different regions will be featured each with their own pavilion, but there won’t be anything showcasing any part of the province north of Quesnel.
Tourism P.G.’s Katherine Scouten says the City had initially planned to be there “We were originally going to be participating with Northern B.C. Tourism who was going to put a kiosk there for the whole 17 days and program it for the 17 days. Then, they decided not to go ahead with that plan and Prince George just couldn’t do it for 17 days on our own.”
Unable to fill the 17 days, Tourism Prince George has decided to try something else :”We’ve just launched the Prince George Ambassador program for Tourism Prince George so all the folks who are down there at the Olympics can have an opportunity to wear their badge of pride for Prince George. We’re also going to go ahead on the trade and investment side with a reception entitled Prince George, a Northern Decade for British Columbia.”
That special reception will be by invitation only on the 23rd of February. “We are really focusing on deepening and strengthening the relationships we already have across Vancouver. Any international guests that will be coming will be invited as well” adds Scouten.
She says Prince George shouldn’t feel it is not being represented at the Games, “We are represented, we’ve been working hard to find other ways we can leverage opportunities and really make sure we can defend any money that we spend down there, so we feel what we’ve got is a plan that is solid and that really takes advantage of the connections we’ve already got and the leveraging opportunities through the Olympics.”
The Cariboo Regional District will have a kiosk on “B.C. Street” featuring Barkerville, Wells and Quesnel.
