Prince George, B.C. – While  not all of the data from the latest Prince George public satisfaction survey is available, early numbers indicate 28% of those polled say they would support an increase in taxes to maintain services at the current level. That is up  from just over 22% recorded last year.

The survey also indicates people are most satisfied with Fire protection services, giving them a rating of 6.1 out of 7.

Next on the list, is library services, which was given a 5.8 out of 7, followed by the Aquatic  Centres which were given a mark of 5.6 out of 7.

The lowest satisfaction rankings were for Pest and weed control which received a mark of  4.5 out of 7 although that is up from 3.7 last year.  Sidewalk maintenance is next with a mark of 4.3, which is also an increase, as it had been marked 3.6 in 2008.

Road and street maintenance remains at the bottom of the list, with a 2.6 out of 7, unchanged from 2008 and down from the 3.0 recorded in 2007.

What data were they given to make an informed decision about this?
What survey?
what a bunch of melarkey!! Who and the hell did they ask, what neighborhood did they ask it in?

They got it right about the roads, but unfortunately, nothing will be done about our roads, because the rich want their own Performing Arts Center!!
And one more thing, I support cuts at City Hall, not a tax increase. We are overburdened by employee's we don't need. The ones we still need, need to take a wage cut. City Council, you are all over payed in these troubling times. Lead by example.............now that is a pipe dream of myself and many!
I really can not believe that people think another tax increase is going to help. They have taken one every year for the last four years and they still can not make it work. Too many city employees with high wages eating away at the money. To much money gone out the door for studies. To much money going out the other door creating drawings for an art centre, new police station and trails. Our population is shrinking and putting the burden on the existing home owners year after year after year due to bad and greedy management is becoming tiring. They just gave themselves ANOTHER raise and then less than a month later the news is another tax increase. Where else other than governments on this planet do you see people giving themselves raises without asking for one? They voted unanimously...LOL of course they did! Wouldn’t you? This is ridiculous and we need to start controlling this or our children’s future in PG is very ugly looking.
Once again Municca, well said. You seem to have the same thoughts about local Government as I do. I tend to be a little blunt...lol when I post. Always a pleasure to hear your comments.
"28% of those polled say they would support an increase in taxes"

Isn't that statement kind of like a reverse petition?

It would make more sense to most to say...72% of those polled say they wouldn't support an increase in taxes.
Who in their right mind would agree to pay more for the same level of service? If I were to pay more for something, I would expect to receive more.

What survey was this?

Satisfied with fire protection? How is one to know how satisfactory it is unless one has a fire event.

It is interesting that the highest satisfaction was with is with non-necessity and the basic essentials were lowest. That should be a hint to city hall where our priorities lie.

Stop pouring resources into wants and nice to haves, and start with just the basics. Just the infrastructure.

Clean Water
Environmentally sensitive sewage
Stable Power grid (I now, provincial jurisdiction)
Well constructed roads that withstand our climate, not like how it is done today in NA
Maintained roads, road surface defects are managed and snow clearing is timely
Clear derelict buildings at the owners expense

IMO we have plenty of public spaces and public buildings. Many of these structures are under utilized. Work towards efficiencies rather than adding more under used and costly facilities.
Yes, what survey was this? Another consultant cost? The city's spending is completely out of control!
What we need is 1 representative from each neighbourhood in city limits who listens to and speaks on behalf of that neighbourhood. I know that is what our elected politicians are supposed to do, but they obviously don't. It is time to show them how they are supposed to do thier job, and that is to listen to the wants and needs of the people. City hall isn't supposed to be telling us what they are going to do, we are supposed to be telling them what they are going to do. If the majority don't ant an Arts Center, then it's a no brainer....no Arts Center. If the majority wants better infrastructure and less money spent on frills, then it is councils job to listen and do that and not tell us what is good for us. What exactly is Dan Rogers qualifications again? If we had had another choice instead of choose between him and a Kinsley clone he would never have been elected. It was a clear example of not electing one person, rather than havimng confidence in the one elected.
Get this one! They are doing the design work on the boundary road upgrade right now as we speak. The whole new road will have lights every 40 meters, a bike trail and sidewalk. No one is going to be living along this road for some time. My neighbourhood is over 40 years old and we still have no sidewalks. This is a prime example of the waste of money that benifit a few. I can understand planning for the future but to pour money into the airport expansion yet again when only one plain has landed since it was finished is well.....Asssssinine!! The plain did not even refuil for God sakes. I can see building and lighting the road but bike path and sidewalk, come on!!!
Sorry for all the spelling errors. :( I was in to much of a hurry to proof read.
Who the hell came up with this headline. Talk about misleading. Satisfaction Survey? Never heard of it. Is this a survey they pass around amongst themselves?
And it seems they totally disregard the 72% who are not satisfied.
Bang on with the fire dapartment ... out of sight, out of mind.

In 35 years plus of living here, I have yet to use them. Kinda happy on that.

Do they do consumer surveys on that department as they do with other products and services on occasion?

"hello sir ... we understand you had a kitchen fire last week ... do you mind answering some questions about the services we were able to provide to you?

1. was there water damage to your house?
2. if there was water damage, in your opinion, was it reasonable or excessive?
3. do you have a pet?
4. did they go beyond normal call of duty to rescue your pet from the kitchen?
5. on a scale of 1 to 63, how would you rate the effectiveness of the department in providing you with assistance?"
Speaking of the desing work for the Boundary Rd.

This mornings paper had an article that stated that L&M received $1.5 million for their work on thart project so far. It then stated that their billable hours were 1,800. That works out to over $800 per billable hour. I thought they were a local firm, not from Hawaii.

An average charge out might be $150/hr. What was received for the rest of the money?
Nobody asked me.
I smell a rat. The resdients of Prince George have had enough of tax increases!

Looks like we are going to get another 4% tax hosing this year.

This is not what we elected you for Dan!
Good questions gus. An average charge out rate for a local engineering Company is closer to $110 per hour.

There is also a small allowance for expenses, and for specialist sub-consultants (also local from Prince George), however your hours are mistaken.

Your assumption of 1,800 hours for 18 months of work, only equates to 100 hours of work for one person per month. The true hours are probably in the range of 12,000-14,000
