Prince George, B.C. -- There was much hoopla atop Cranbrook Hill yesterday, as the University of Northern B.C. welcomed the start of the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympics...
The Northern Undergraduate Students Society launched its first-ever Winter Carnival to coincide with the start of the Winter Games.
NUGSS President, Lindsay Gardner, says the festival kicked off with a broomball competition, relay races in the snow, a snowman building competition, and local entertainment before participants and observers made their way inside the student society centre in anticipation of the start of the opening ceremonies, which were being broadcast live from Vancouver.
RBC Dominion's Don Keller was on-hand to present UNBC President, Dr. George Iwama, with the painting that was created on-stage during the Olympic torch relay ceremonies in Prince George back on January 29th.
Gardner says NUGSS also took the opportunity to present the university and Northern Sports Centre with a plaque commemorating the torch's trip around campus the following day.
When the ceremonies began in Vancouver at 6pm, Gardner says approximately 200 people were crowded into the Live site at UNBC to 'be there' from here, at home.
UNBC's Olympic Live site will be broadcasting coverage of the Olympics from 9am until 9pm daily, throughout the Games.
Gardner says with students on reading break, many will be taking advantage of the site. It is open to the public, as well.
