Prince George, B.C. - Approximately 200 high school students from across Northern B.C. took part in UNBC's first-ever 'Discover Health Forum' at the main campus atop Cranbrook Hill yesterday.
The event was designed to allow the students to meet leaders in the health and health sciences fields and expose them to practical 'hands on' experience in health research and technology.
The students got to participate in some interesting experiments, involving DNA extraction and X-ray technology, and a career panel gave the students an overview of the many health-related career paths available in the North.
UNBC's Associate Vice-President of Research, Dr. Malcolm Ogborn, says, "There is a significant amount of data being published recently that shows young people tend to gravitate more towards the careers they observe when they grow up." (photo at left courtesy of UNBC)
He says, "There is also an ever-increasing need for health practitioners and researchers in the North, so this is certainly a mutually-beneficial opportunity."
Ogborn says the university was originally aiming for 100 students, but the response was overwhelming and almost double that number was scheduled to attend the fair from communities including Chetwynd, Quesnel, Fort St. James, Vanderhoof, Williams Lake and 100-Mile House.
