YXS Home To Large Russian Carrier This Week

Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Airport will be hosting an international visitor over the remaining days of the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympics...
At the outset of the Games, YXS's Marketing and Business Development Director had hoped this would be the case...and a Russian rumble in the skies above a little later this afternoon will make Todd Doherty's dream a reality.
A Russian IL 76, or Ilyushin 76, will be landing at the airport this afternoon and will spend the next five days parked here, undergoing some maintenance and servicing.
Doherty says the large aircraft is a combination passenger/cargo carrier, unable to find a parking space in the Lower Mainland due to capacity constraints as a result of the Olympics.
He says he doesn't have a dollar-figure to attach to the plane's extended stay, but says the 11 crew members will account for the equivalent of 55-hotel room nights, meals, shopping, catering for the aircraft and an enormous fuel-up at the end of the five-day stay.
In addition, Doherty says airport staff are working with staff at the hotel to ensure the crew members fully enjoy their visit to Northern B.C. -- he says they rarely get the opportunity for such downtime and many have never been to Canada.
When the IL 76 leaves at the end of the Olympics, Doherty says it will fly into Vancouver to pick up its playload.
