Council Puts Money Into Downtown

Prince George, B.C. - While the RCMP's request for additional staff members was voted down, Prince George Councillors did approve five other service enhancement items that had been deferred from earlier budget meetings...with the biggest ticket item aimed at improving the downtown core.
They are:
- $28-thousand dollars for the PG Public Library
- $250-thousand dollar increase to the snow control levy
- $58-hundred dollars for Communities in Bloom
- $7,000 for the city's Heritage Commission to begin a registry of local heritage sites
- and, the largest item, the creation of a $350-thousand dollar reserve fund for projects to improve the downtown
It was the $350-thousand dollar commitment to a downtown reserve fund that created the most discussion...
Councillor Cameror Stolz says he supported the decision because it's time for council to move beyond studies, and start taking action, which requires money.
Councilor Deborah Munoz, who voted against the fund, says the city should consider exploring existing resources before going to the taxpayers. Although she voted against the proposed amount of the fund, Munoz is in favour of creating the Downtown Clean Team, as she has seen its success in other cities.
Stolz says 69 items have been identified by the Mayor's Downtown Task force as immediate priorities for the downtown, with 19 of those ready for immediate
action.
He says the money set aside in the reserve fund could be used towards those getting started on those top priorities.
