Prince George, B.C. - Local artist, Betty Kovacic, has been awarded almost $20-thousand dollars to create her largest piece of work to date.

The CNC Fine Arts Instructor has been selected by the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund to create a painting that commemorates and recognizes the experiences of ethno-cultural communities affected by the country's first national internment operations between 1914 and 1920.

During that time, thousands of Canadian men, women and children of East European descent were branded as 'enemy aliens' and imprisoned.  Kovacic's painting is tentatively titled, "Shadows of the Past" and will be her largest work, thus far, in her career, at two-metres by five-metres.

Much of Kovacic's art work over the last 20-years has dealt with social issues and injustices, such as her exhibit on the missing women of Vancouver's downtown eastside.

"I deal with the human condition and with voices that need to be heard," she says.  Kovacic plans to use archival images from various museums around Canada for her latest project and says, "I'm going to learn a lot by doing it."
