RCMP Unveils New Downtown Unit

Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George RCMP detachment may have had its recent request for three new officers turned down, but city council's decision hasn't stymied the force's effort to shift from a reactive to a more proactive approach.
A new Downtown Enforcement Unit, comprised of one corporal and five officers, will be introduced at news conference in front of the PG Hotel later this morning.
RCMP Superintendent Brenda Butterworth-Carr says this is not a service enhancement. She admits if council would have approved the RCMP's 2010 budget request, the boost in the number of general duty officers would have put the detachment in a more proactive position, based on a strategic assessment done back in 2006.
"(Instead,) the downtown enforcement unit was created through the re-structuring of our resources within the detachment," says Butterworth-Carr. The DEU will be unveiled with the mayor and members of the Downtown Task Force. "This is a community effort in order to resolve some of the issues that we're encountering."
Butterworth-Carr noted in her release of the city's 2009 crime stats last week that a spike in personal crimes is a sign that RCMP efforts in the community are working, and people are feeling comfortable enough to come forward with their complaints. She says it's efforts like being involved in the Mayor's Task Force, the team policing concept used in the downtown, and now this DEU that are/will make a big difference.
"It has equated to a sense of confidence and that's the feedback that I'm receiving at the detachment." She says she's hearing it from city councillors, from business people and others in the community...that they're feeling more comfortable in being able to walk downtown, as a result of the RCMP's presence and programs.

But definitely a stong police presence would be a good start....
