Prince George, B.C. -  Interested parties wanting to participate in the Cohen Commission of Inquiry into the decline of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River have until the middle of the week to submit their application.

The commission was established in November and will hold hearings to investigate and report on the decline of salmon stocks in the river.  Based on the inquiry's findings, Commission Chair Bruce Cohen will make recommendations aimed at improving the sustainability of the sockeye salmon fishery in the Fraser, including any possible changes to DFO's management of the fishery.

The commission will accept applications for 'standing' until 4pm this Wednesday, March 3rd.  Individuals, groups, governments, agencies, institutions, and other stakeholders must submit a written application showing they have a substantial and direct interest in the sockeye salmon fishery.

Participants who are granted standing are eligible to apply for funding for legal counsel.  Detailed guidelines for applying for standing and funding are available on the commission's website at
www.cohencommission.ca

The commission is encouraging applications by email.
