Petro Can led the charge last night as gas prices were hiked 4 cents litre (18.2 cents a gallon) in the city boosting the price to 97.9 cents. Following the lead of Petro Can other service stations were quick to follow. With a figure of 97.9 cents Prince George was one of the highest priced areas for gas next to Toronto in Canada.
Gas before taxes;
Prince George | 63.3 |
Victoria | 59.0 |
Edmonton | 55.8 |
Saskatoon | 60.9 |
Thunder Bay | 54.2 |
Montreal | 57.4 |
Sydney N.S. | 61.5 |
According to MJ Ervin and Associates, crude prices were listed as the same in Vancouver, Kamloops, Seattle and a number of BC centers.
The difference in our prices comes not from the refinery mark up at Husky, where it remained at 9.00 cents, the lowest of any market researched: Vancouver 10.8, Victoria 11.6, Prince George 9.0, Kamloops 10.8, Seattle 9.2 and Canada with an average of 10.2
The difference is linked to the mark up at the pumps with Prince George having the highest mark up:
Vancouver | 3.9 |
Victoria | 8.8 |
Prince George | 12.3 |
Kamloops | 7.4 |
Seattle | 10.8 |
Canadian average | 10.2 |

I figure a centrally located independent gas station that sell their gas at cost as a lost leader to bring in clientel for other areas of business would do very well if they stuck with the strategy and got the message out to the people of the savings they are responsible for. Loyalty would be a big thing for them.
That said I'd challange anyone to name a gas station operator that makes any money off the gas in the stations they operate as is currently. All the money goes to the parent franchisor and not the fanchisee.
