Report from Parliament's Hill - March 11, 2010

By Prince George - Peace River M.P. Jay Hill

For the majority of taxpayers in Prince George-Peace River, last week’s federal budget “got it right”… at the right time.

While it’s an opinion shared by many Canadians, responsible management of the nation’s finances has always been one of the very highest priorities among residents in our region.

The need to ‘get a grip’ on the national debt is one of the reasons I entered politics.

Yet, the unprecedented global economic downturn that began in 2008 demanded equally unprecedented, urgent action.

And in last year’s federal budget, our Conservative Government launched the Economic Action Plan, a two-year plan to stimulate our economy, protect

Canadians hit hardest by the global recession and invest in our future growth.

Over the past year, we implemented the first phase of this stimulus plan, on schedule, as promised.

That plan has helped protect existing jobs and create new jobs. It is stimulating economic growth now, while building the infrastructure Canada needs for long-term economic growth.

In the second phase of our Economic Action Plan we will invest almost $20 billion

this year to stimulate economy activity, create and protect jobs, and solidify the

economic recovery. We will complete thousands of stimulus projects, putting Canadians to work building roads, bridges, water and

sewer systems across the country. We will continue to reduce taxes on businesses to encourage private sector investment and job creation.

We will continue to invest in workers, training and youth employment.

Locally, forestry workers welcomed the Budget’s extension of current or recently-expired Worksharing Agreements by 26 weeks.

Our area’s communities will benefit from an additional $14.7-million per year for Western Economic Diversification and $11-million per year for the Community Futures.

Single parent families will benefit from changes to Universal Child Care Benefit. The New Horizons for Seniors Program will receive $10-million over two years.

BUT…we know that the other extraordinary federal spending demanded by the recession cannot continue indefinitely.

That’s why Budget 2010 includes a very detailed deficit-fighting three-point plan to return to the balanced budgets I know that my constituents and most Canadians want.

First, we will end stimulus spending as planned with the Economic Action Plan’s temporary measures winding down by March 31, 2011.

Second, we will restrain spending through targeted measures, such as freezing the salaries of the Prime Minister, Ministers,

MPs and Senators and the budgets of Ministers’ offices. We will also freeze department’s operating budgets – the money government spends on wages and administration.

And third, we will undertake a comprehensive review of government administrative functions and overhead costs. Overall, this plan will cut the deficit nearly in half in just two years, and cut it by two-thirds in three years.

We will NOT raise taxes and we will NOT cut spending on essential public services such as health care, post-secondary education and other social services. Total federal transfers to British Columbia will hit $6.3-billion in 2010-11. That’s $1.3-million more than the old Liberal Government transferred to BC during their last year in office.

And there’s more good to this budget …the Liberals will allow it to pass, sparing election-weary Canadians another trip to the polls!

"We will not raise taxes"etc,etc.etc,...
I think we heard the same rhetoric regarding the HST from the Campbell government not so long ago.
And we all know where that went!
In short, they lied...all governments lie when it suits their needs, and the federal government will also lie.
That's a given.
all right Mr federal representative:
What are your thoughts and possible actions on behalf of your constituents in regards to this latest finding of air quality in your riding?
Are you going to leave this for the municipal and provincial governments to take all the heat?

I am asking that you take an active part in getting to the bottom of the 18 times acceptable levels of carcinogen in the air shed.

I am asking that you speak of this in the house and ask why the federal environment agency has allowed this to continue since the smell of money was first noticed 40 years ago. Why was it not determined what that noticeable smell was and its origin?

I am asking that you inquire as to why this has not been an issue to our representatives.

Now is the time to show your true concern for your riding and its residents that voted for you to hold that seat. Any of your family that still reside in Prince George are subject to this contamination just like the rest of us.
While you are at it could you please do something about our Provincial Government strangling the seniors of this province. 33% in Hydro hikes, HST and now Natural Gas wants 17%. They also took 600 million dollars from the ICBC coffers so we can expect a large increase there as well. It is all well and good that the Federal Government is not raising taxes but the Prince George City is and so is or provincial government. We need help to stop the insane increases! There was a time when utilities raised rates one or two percent, that is unheard of now. Huge increases are only going to hurt the sick, poor and elderly. When is all of this going to stop? It breaks my heart to see so many old people in a panic.

Could you also come up with some figures as to how much Canadians are actually losing from their hard earned money towards taxes and fees. Factor in the utilities as well. Maybe if people actually see it in black and white they will finally say ENOUGH!!
You all realize that Jay in all likelihood doesn't read this site or your comments.

He's too busy counting the money he's going to get from his golden handshake pension when he retires.
Most of what you are asking for is Municipal or Provincial Jurisdiction, and therefore you are just wasting your time.

Go to the Governments responsible, to try and get results.
u both may be correct, but we must try every possible avenue to reach anyone that can positively impact this.

I would hope that he has enough concern for his riding that he would actually read the responses to an article he wrote. It just seems to me that he selected opinion250 for his editorials because he recognized this to be a valuable communication channel to his constituents.

Can't hurt and might help.
These articles are not written for Opinion250 that I can see. You can go to his website www.jayhillmp.com and read the same thing.

There's also a link on his website to ask him a question directly. It might not be very effective, but it would be more than putting your comments here I would think.
