Prince George, B.C.- For the third straight year, the City of Prince George will take part in the Earth Hour event.
On March 27th at 8:30 p.m.  (local time)  Earth Hour will begin.

This annual event, coordinated by the World Wildlife Fund, is a call to action on climate change. It calls on people around the world to show they support climate change initiatives by reducing energy consumption.

Last year, the City reduced  its  electrical consumption  by 1.5%  over the course of that hour.  In total,  the  electrical consumption in B.C. was reduced by 1.1% the equivalent of turning off 1.5 million light bulbs.

The idea is to have as many individuals, households, and businesses as possible turn off their lights as a symbolic statement to take action on climate change. The intention is also to have corporate participants commit to turning of their lights and communicate Earth Hour through internal and external communications channels.

The City of Prince George will participate by:
  • Turning off the City Hall tree lights for the full evening of Saturday March 27th,
  • Turning off City office lighting, and staff computers where appropriate and where safety is not compromised, and
  • Encouraging City staff to participate in the event at home where appropriate and safety is not compromised.

"Turning off the City Hall tree lights for the full evening of Saturday March 27th, "

Even City Hall is too lazy to take down the Christmas lights. Now I see where everybody gets it from.
Shouldnt staff computers and lights be off at city hall every evening that they are not required?
Does this go hand in hand with the award PG won a couple of weeks ago that had to do with lighting up the winter nights here in PG. F'n hippocrits.
Nurturing nature for an hour will do more for the earth than shutting off your lights and electrical devices for an hour. What a bunch of nonsense Earth Hour is.

Look, all it does is free up YOUR power to be sold without consideration to the shareholders of BCHydro, aka BC resident. Also, when every single level of government, their bureaucrats and corporate managers and respective ministries/departments unplug from the system, then I will consider participating as well.

The other side of it for me is street lights can be shut off. Besides, ALL street lamps SHOULD be on motion sensors and use the latest technology to reduce "waste" and eliminate photon pollution! (We have forgotten what the sky is supposed to look like at night.)
Don't get me started on light pollution! (Light pollution affects birds, wildlife, human health - to name three.)
...rant over - for the moment...
