Ft St John- Classes were cancelled friday at North Peace Secondary School and the school was temporary closed after some safety concerns were reported to school staff and police thursday night.
These concerns stemmed from a suspicious letter found by a staff member that had been posted at various locations throughout the school. The letter did not make any explicit threats to any person or persons, however, since finding this letter, a number of rumours had circulated amongst students and staff as to the intent of the letter. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was closed to allow the police to conduct a full investigation into this matter.
The police investigation has revealed that this suspicious letter was actually the work of a student for an English class assignment. The letter spoke of the end of the world and the writer acquiring a fully automatic firearm to better defend himself or herself from threats in the post apocalyptic world.
The student, who was proud of his work, had posted copies of the letter at various locations throughout the school. Either a staff member or student misinterpreted the message in the letter to the extent that he or she believed there was a threat to students or staff at the school.
“With the technology today, the spread of information is virtually instantaneous with various social media outlets, says Cpl. Steve Perret of the Fort St John RCMP. In this case, a message in a letter was misinterpreted and it spread like wildfire amongst the students and staff”.
