Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has teamed up with the Prince George Air Improvement Roundtable (PG AIR) to encourage motorists to reduce unnecessary vehicle idling.

New anti-idling signs are being installed at locations throughout the city.

Three hundred signs were ordered, at a cost of $29/sign for a total of $8700 + taxes for the sign printing. Of the 300 signs made, 128 have been installed at various City locations.

The remaining signs have been installed at UNBC, CNC, Northern Health, PG Airport, and other locations (about 20 organizations in total).  The signs are also being offered to businesses and organizations in Prince George on a first come first served basis as the signs are free but the supply of signs is limited.

You will have to call Clean Air Ambassador Katherine Lapadat-Janzen at 250-565-6167 by this Friday if you are interested in having one of the signs.

The anti-idling program is co –sponsored by the City of Prince George, Natural Resources Canada and the Provincial Ministry of the Environment.

What a crock! What a waste of money! The past two weeks heading down Foothills very early in the morning, you have to stop at the light at North Nechako and wait for it to go through all the cycles and not another vehicle around to trigger it to go red in the first place. Time the lights down the so called Bypass, how about Queesnsway and 6th? Wait for that light for along time, it was set up so the city could get out and continue now you sit for no reason, no traffic nothing. Use the 9k to repair some roads! My gawd what a bunch of boneheads.
Although I do agree the signs are kind of stupid, I also think sitting at a red light when there is NO other traffic around, just because its RED....is equally stupid. If its all clear, do youself a favor save some gas and just stop then procede when safe to do so.
"Idling gets you nowhere".

I have had my furnace on for many decades. My house is still in the same location.

It may come as a surprise to some, but the motor in a vehicle generates energy that can be used for things other than moving the vehicle.
Well said acrider54! It is a crock. I'll be ignoring these signs & I'm sure most others will too. Wait until it's -30C and see how many people are idling or +30C and we need our air conditioners.
I wonder who actually paid for the signs?

The story says they are sponsored by the City, Natural Resources Canada and the Ministry of Environment.

A 3 way split or did our generous city foot the whole bill?
Like I said yesterday big industry will get a "get out of jail free" card, while the rest of us pay!

Your right mythoughts,do we just jump into our vehicles at -30 first thing in the morning and just drive away!
Funny thing is council THINK they are doing something about bad air but in reality they haven't a clue,do they!
What a crock is right!!! We were at the coliseum for skating and what do you see parked right in front of a "no idle" sign?? A city of prince George pick up idling with nobody inside. Wish I would have had my camera!!! The city expects us to obey these signs and their own employees ignore them!!WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!
I feel so warm and fuzzy right now, lets all give each other a big hug and get on with our happy lives.

My remote start is one of the best things I have ever bought.
Diesel vehicles should not be allowed to idle anywhere. I don't know why the owners of diesels feel they have to leave them running from morning until night. I went to the bank yesterday afternoon and it was about 8 degrees outside. Right in front of the BMO at 15th and Central was a diesel pickup sitting there idling all the time I was in the bank. In my opinion that was worse than any smell that comes from the pulp mill. I would welcome idle free zones in any parking lot and it should be enforced. Get the people that write parking tickets to start writing tickets for idling in a non-idle zone, and you will see the vehicles shut off pretty quickly.
All gov't money is TAX PAYER's money, no matter which dept it comes thru, no matter whether the money comes from city, Natural resources or Ministry of Environment - it's all from the same pockets.
It is all from the same pockets.

What few seem to recognize is that much of it returns to the same pockets.

The sheet metal cutter
The graphic artist
The painter
The order clerk
The crater
The transporter
The installer ...

and actually too numerous to list if one starts with the geologist who explores for the ore that is extractred from the ground to make the metal for the sign.

Even if the order went to China, they will owe us money and buy something from us or someone else who will then buy from us .....

Keep the money moving people. The printing presses are not in the homes of the taxppayers quite yet ...... :-)
In Vancouver they had nuclear free zone signs for the longest time. Guess what? No nukes in Vancouver now. Who says signs don't work?
Maybe they can sell these signs to the public if they happen to have three symptoms . An enclosed garage, a polluting vehicle and a suicidal potential.
Great idea. Between no idling and our new burning bylaws we will soon have the cleanest air shed in the land.
I wonder if tim hortons will purchase any of the signs.....
Maybe they should post some of these signs at City hall to inspire the slow moving bureaucrats!
Duffer

My only conclusion is that diesel fuel is too cheap, and that the government should at least triple the tax on it.

I don't know my car uses a fraction of the fuel a diesel truck does, but I don't leave it running all day, yet when I leave work, it starts and takes me home, not only in the +10 we are currently experiencing, but also at -30.

If a pickup truck that costs 2 or 3 times what my car does can’t start in cold weather, than perhaps they are not wise investments.
Can your little car haul your camper, horses, lumber, quads,or boat Vdesign, thats why we buy trucks!
Vdesign

pretty naive world you live in.

Think your car would take 150 km's a day of bush roads, summer and winter? Think your car will carry tools, fuel for equipment, tires for skidders, fire fighting supplies? Will your car act as an ambulance that is expected to reach hundreds of km's into the bush?

Didnt think so, but while your content earning $17.00 an hour and having to have you wife work 40 hours a week so you can afford those house and car payments, we salute you for making sure your car doesnt idle and the fact that your subject it to cold starts at minus 30.
It's not an investment Vdesign, it's a necessity. I wouldn't be without my truck or my remote start, especially in the winter. I start my truck at least 10 minutes before I leave the house, just before I throw an extra log on the fire in my woodstove ;-)
I leave my truck idling because of the stupid breath-alyazer iginition lock.
haha...good one Rounder. thanks for the chuckle.
