Chris Bone and Deana Allan of the Northern B.C. -Yukon Red Cross Office presented an update to Prince George Council on the efforts to help the victims of last year's catastrophic tsunami.
The people of the Northern B.C. and Yukon Region donated $1.4 million dollars to help the victims. The Red Cross says it is not looking for further financial donationsat thispoint, but they would like to invite people to take part in the basic training on how to be disaster volunteer "delegate".
Chris Bone told Council the Red Cross recognizes there is a long road ahead to help the people of the Tsunami and estimate it will take a decade to help rebuild those areas hit the worst. Issues that have been identified as presenting challenges in the years ahead include:
-emergency relief needs,
-working in areas of conflict
-land ownership issues
-lack of infrastructure
-access to materials
-resisting the urge to rebuild quickly at the expense of planning.
Spokesperson Deana Allan says the idea, or hope, is to build "better, a higher quality of building that will reduce the potential for disaster, in addition to doing better community planning."
