Prince George, B.C. - It was the community of Burns Lake that was able to save the most energy during Earth Hour on Saturday night. That community saw consumption of electricity drop by 7% from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The results for Prince George were not available at time of this writing.
  • Quesnel was down 1.7%,
  • Mackenzie was down 1.5%
  • Williams Lake electrical consumption dropped  2.2%
  • McBride was down 0.7%
  • Houston‘s savings were 3.2%
  • Telkwa and Smithers were both down by 3% and Kitimat was down by 2.9%
Provincially, the energy savings. were a little lower than last year. The provincial drop was 1.04%, down from the 1.1% recorded in 2009.
Fort St. John actually recorded a boost in energy consumption during Earth Hour. Between 8:30 and 9:30 Saturday night, Fort St. John saw energy consumption go up   by .06%. Last year, that community saw energy consumption drop by 1.5%.

Fort Nelson saw it’s power consumption drop by 1.6%.

BC Hydro says although the overall provincial drop is less than last year, if B.C. could conserve the same amount just one hour every night, the combined savings would be enough to power about 2,200 homes for one year.

Earth Hour trophys should be awarded wholly to North Korea. The whole country is in the dark every night 24/7 365 days a year. (Including leap years) I say this after seeing the satellite pictures of North Korea at night. However, I wouldn't want to have their standard of living here while "saving" the planet.
Will there be a mini baby-boom in Burns Lake nine months from now?
Seems the novelty is wearing out already. Stats for PG not available yet at press time, likely story. I wouldn't be surprised if our consuption was up as well, but they need time to fudge the numbers so it doesn't look so bad. I think it's all a scam anyways and just another set of numbers for Hydro to use to have another increase in fees.
The problem was it was Saturday night. If it would have been a Wednesday or something there would have been better results.
