Prince George, B.C.-   Police in Prince George say there is a cheque cashing scheme in the city that is targeting  seniors.

According to police it works like this: Two men pull up to a senior and advise they need a cheque cashed but because they are from out of town, they don’t have a local bank. The victim then takes the cheque into the bank they deal with where they are known by the tellers. The senior exchanges the cheque for cash, and the money is turned over to the suspects. Problem is, it then takes anywhere from one to several days for the bank to have the cheque returned NSF.

The cheques being used in this scheme appear to have been issued by Burrell Auto Insurance, and have been issued on Alberta Treasury Branch cheques. They look legitimate. A second set of cheques was issued by the Cala Company.

The suspects, both black, in their thirties, have been seen driving a medium sized white sedan, possible with Alberta plates. No make or model of the vehicle has been obtained.

You would think people would no better by now!
I don't stop for anyone anymore, like you got the Time, or for Smokes, or Spare Change, I just do like I cant hear them, to much Scum crawling on our Streets! What will it take to get the Hoodies on small Bikes of the sidewalks and Parking Lots, up to no good!
Heard of Western Union?or those pay day cheque cashing places?how gullible some people are!!The banks don't hold funds or have any way of ascertaining that the funds are there??a simple phone call would have put a stop to all this.
Outwest is right-I was at Parkwood Mall and approached 3x in less than the 100' from my car for money, money, and the last woman started off with I need directions just got off the bus, don't know where I'm going to my "friends house oh by the way have $ for cab fare or can you drive me there??Suggested she use the phone at Save On counter to call her "friends".
Sorry, but nobody 'deserves' to get scammed. People who prey on the trusting and vulnerable are a special kind of scum.
In this day and age why does it take the bank several days to realize a cheque has NSF? Seriously, can't they just scan the cheque and have the issuing bank yeah or nay the cheque in minutes?
I have been helped by strangers in times of need and I find it hard to reject someone with a hard luck story. There are many out there in legitimate need who are too easily dismissed as "scum".
Once upon a time we had governments which could provide a hand up to citizens in distress. Now they only come to the aid of those who come to grief from their own greed; namely corporations and banks.
When we look at the homeless, the crumbling roads and closing schools it is well to say to oneself, "My tax cuts at work".
This is just SummerSoul's opinion
"Once upon a time we had governments which could provide a hand up to citizens in distress."

Oh I don't know about that. Looking around the downtown there are plenty of social services to help people out. What's the saying I heard, "There is no reason anyone should be going hungry in PG". If they're asking you for money, you can bet it's not for a bowl of soup and a coffee.
We always have to remember that some of our seniors are lonely. They're from the old school where everyone was honest.

when I was a child, people that got off the CN train would knock on our door and ask for some food. We lived two miles away from the tracks. They just started walking and they had hope.

My mother made them two sandwiches with the most magnificent home made bread. And she gave them a cup of tea. As much tea as he wanted. (It was always a hopeful he). It may have cost my parents 20 cents to give that man 2 sandwiches and as much tea as he wanted.

There was no government to "give a hand up".
Every time we rely on government it costs.

GOVERNMENTS DON'T HAVE MONEY. PEOPLE DO!

I can't believe that people that should know we are taxed to death, still say "government should look after it". I know I'm starting to rant. I'll sign off.
