Mother Of Ian Bush Pushing for Change, Not Cash

Prince George, B.C. - Linda Bush, the mother of  Ian Bush ( who was shot to death by the RCMP) says she is not looking for any cash from the RCMP.
In the wake of a recent settlement between the RCMP and Sofia Cisowski, the mother of Robert Dziekanski (who died after being tazered 5 times at the Vancouver Airport) Linda Bush says she has been in contact with the RCMP but she is not looking for a cash settlement “What I have always been pushing for is a change in the way things are done” says Linda Bush.
“While I feel that in the case of Robert Dziekanski’s mother, compensation was in order. In my case, I have sought changes in the system” says Linda Bush.
Last week, the RCMP apologized to Dziekanski’s mother Sofia Cisowski for the role they played in her son’s death. They also established a bursary in his name, and reached an undisclosed cash settlement with her.
During his apology to Ms. Cisowski, Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass said the RCMP have also made changes in policies, practices, training and reporting requirements in relation to the use of tazers as well as changes in how police are investigated. “We have introduced a new RCMP policy around independent investigation which states that where ever possible, an external independent agency will conduct investigations into any RCMP in-custody deaths and allegations that are serious or sensitive in nature to ensure impartiality and thoroughness. In addition, it is our hope that BC will soon establish its own regime responsible for these independent investigations, oversight and review of police actions.”
This is the kind of change Linda Bush has been pursuing. She says she has had discussions with the RCMP and she believes she is getting close to achieving her goals.
Provincial Solicitor General  Kash Heed says  the province  has been looking at the  proposal  for a cvilian  led integrated unit of both RCMP and municipal officers to  investigate the criminal aspects of police involved incidents leading to serious injury or death.  Theproposal was presented by the BC Asociation of Chiefs of Police.  "We are examining the feasibility of their proposal and the many issues surrounding it, including funding and resources and how we work with municipal and federal governments who have a role to play as well.  However, we also want to make sure that we have the best model for BC, and that we are able to consider all of the most relevant information--so it’s important that we allow Commissioner Braidwood to finish the second part of his public inquiry and so that we will have the benefit of his recommendations."

A courageous woman and mother doing what is right IMO. Good for her to stick to the principle and fight for real meaning to the tragedy that took her son and was covered up the way it was by insider investigating.

Lind Bush deserves and I think has the support of most everyone who has heard her story, so hopefully she can reach an agreement that satisfies her primary concerns of what I understand are independent investigations, transparency, and accountability. Our country and society would be much improved if she wins her battle.
Very nice comment Eagleone. She is a beautiful lady and has done so much for a lot of people. I wish her the best!
Mrs.Bush is also owed an apology by the RCMP.
And another inquiry as well.
Far too many holes and unanswered questions in the first one.
Because of that, these cases will never completely go away and closure will be a long time coming for people like Linda Bush and her family.
As there will be in the Kevin St.Arnaud shooting, as another example.
I have always believed that one of the biggest reasons the outcomes of so many inquiry's involving RCMP/cops seems so unfair and self-serving, is the fear by the courts/justice system of opening up a huge can of worms by finding against law enforcement i.e....the RCMP.
Find them guilty of something once, and they will found guilty many times.
It would set a precedent and nobody wants to go there.
They don't get it right all the time, and they do need to be held accountable for that.
just dont argue with the cops or you might get shot in the back of the head..thats the bottom line
I think it was completely wrong for the RCMP to settle a cash award to the mother of Dziekanski, an official, public apology, and immediate dismissal of the members involved, including those who lied to us until the cellphone video was rightfully returned to the owner is what was called for in my opinion. To me the money cheapens Robert Dziekanski's life, in essence the RCMP said 'here is what his lifw was worth' X dollars, oh, and we are very sorry too. Kudos to Mrs. Bush, she is displaying a depth of character that many of us could not achieve.
May she continue to pursue the RCMP until they admit that their methods of self investigation are flawed AND change that process, allowing civilians who are not hand picked by the police to serve as members of inquiries into police actions.
metalman.
I do have to agree with you metalman!
oops..hit the button by mistake......
I think paying this money to Robert Dziekanski's mother was a way of putting a lid on the case.
I am not expecting much from Thomas Braidwood when he gives his final report.
This is over.
Ditto Eagleone, I couldn't have said it better myself. She is amazing! I don't know that I would have her stength and courage after losing a son so tragically.
Money doesn't bring a lost child back, its like a pacifier that they offer to make it all go away. Way to go Linda! Best of luck to you!
Quit laying all the blame on the police. When you get a 6'4" irrational person who had been drinking on the plane all night tossing computer monitors around then somethings going to happen. WHy didnt the customs and immigration people check him themselves...ask him if he needed assistance - but they let him wander around that area aimlessly for hours.
They have dozens of security cameras there. In reality he should not have been allowed admittance into canada at all due to his past criminality - 5 yrs for robbery folks. ANd what kind of mom comes to the airport to pick up her son she hasnt seen in so long and then just leaves? SHe only cares about him now with the big payout ...not before when she left him in poland and came here.
As for Mrs Bush, well it is unfortunate Ian died, however a choke hold is deemed to be lethal force and if you put a cop in a choke hold and whisper you are going to kill him into his ear, you reap what you sow.
lmorg with an e I had such high hopes for you! Oh well.

:(
What, you had hoped he was going to be a police-basher like everyone else?
No MrPG, I think its about at least having some respect for the dead. Especially when every one can agree the out come of what happened is not acceptable to anyone's standards. Dancing on a grave is never cool.

What Imorg claims happened there is no evidence of... because the tapes were destroyed, and the only person that could tell us what if Ian said anything is no longer alive to tell his side of the story. To just be callus and make up a scenario that fits a police can do nothing wrong routine lacks class to say the least. Its a tribalist mentality found in third world barbarism, which is not an acceptable tactic for the defense of Canada's national police force... otherwise its just further evidence of the depths to which the RCMP have sunk. I'm sure some in the RCMP read comments like Imorge's above and want no part in that kind of smearing of the dead with guilt that can not be proven.

I couldn't agree more. I also agree that the police are human like the rest of us and make mistakes.

And just as you say there are people who always rush to the defense of the police, there are far more people who blame them for everything that goes wrong, especially on this site. I would like to see how many of the armchair cynics would have handled themselves in the same situations that they are so quick to criticise.
Own the mistakes.
Speaking of mistakes on Friday Free For All I didn't post this link properly.

"Own the mistakes."

Gee that's simple. I'm not sure Ian Bush's fate would have been any different if he whispered he was going to kill me while we were rolling around on the ground.
I hope you were able to enjoy the sunrise before the snow started this morning mrpg. Was beautiful. Have a good day.
