Prince George, B.C. - Linda Bush, the mother of Ian Bush ( who was shot to death by the RCMP) says she is not looking for any cash from the RCMP.
In the wake of a recent settlement between the RCMP and Sofia Cisowski, the mother of Robert Dziekanski (who died after being tazered 5 times at the Vancouver Airport) Linda Bush says she has been in contact with the RCMP but she is not looking for a cash settlement “What I have always been pushing for is a change in the way things are done” says Linda Bush.
“While I feel that in the case of Robert Dziekanski’s mother, compensation was in order. In my case, I have sought changes in the system” says Linda Bush.
Last week, the RCMP apologized to Dziekanski’s mother Sofia Cisowski for the role they played in her son’s death. They also established a bursary in his name, and reached an undisclosed cash settlement with her.
During his apology to Ms. Cisowski, Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass said the RCMP have also made changes in policies, practices, training and reporting requirements in relation to the use of tazers as well as changes in how police are investigated. “We have introduced a new RCMP policy around independent investigation which states that where ever possible, an external independent agency will conduct investigations into any RCMP in-custody deaths and allegations that are serious or sensitive in nature to ensure impartiality and thoroughness. In addition, it is our hope that BC will soon establish its own regime responsible for these independent investigations, oversight and review of police actions.”
This is the kind of change Linda Bush has been pursuing. She says she has had discussions with the RCMP and she believes she is getting close to achieving her goals.
Provincial Solicitor General Kash Heed says the province has been looking at the proposal for a cvilian led integrated unit of both RCMP and municipal officers to investigate the criminal aspects of police involved incidents leading to serious injury or death. Theproposal was presented by the BC Asociation of Chiefs of Police. "We are examining the feasibility of their proposal and the many issues surrounding it, including funding and resources and how we work with municipal and federal governments who have a role to play as well. However, we also want to make sure that we have the best model for BC, and that we are able to consider all of the most relevant information--so it’s important that we allow Commissioner Braidwood to finish the second part of his public inquiry and so that we will have the benefit of his recommendations."

Lind Bush deserves and I think has the support of most everyone who has heard her story, so hopefully she can reach an agreement that satisfies her primary concerns of what I understand are independent investigations, transparency, and accountability. Our country and society would be much improved if she wins her battle.
