Eric Allan ( holding notebook) talks with some other area Captains  and some volunteer canvassers about the rules for collecting  names on the petition.
Prince George, B.C.- The Fight HST petition is ready to hit the streets of Prince George.
About 50 volunteer canvassers attended a meeting this afternoon at the Professional Building at 1705 Third Avenue, to get their official badges, petitions and instructions on how to make sure they do it right.
While the campaign only needs to collect 10% of the registered voters in the two Prince George ridings, the canvassers are pushing for 15%.
“We hope each canvasser will be able to collect 200 signatures” says Prince George–Mackenzie riding Captain Eric Allan. That way, there will be room for error, and according to Allan there are several factors which can deem a name invalid. First, the person signing the petition has to be a registered voter as of April 6th, 2010. If they have moved to a new address, they must first file an official change of address with Elections B.C. before their signature will be considered valid.   If the address assigned to the signature is incorrect, the name will be considered invalid, and then of course, the signature has to be on the right riding sheet. Even if a person is a registered voter, if they sign for the wrong riding, the name will be tossed.
“It is so important to get lots of signatures and that they are correct” says Allan, “If we don’t do it right, we could lose it (the initiative) for the whole province.”
Each riding must collect 10% of the registered vote. If even one riding falls short, the whole initiative to force the Provincial government to rescind the HST will fail.
While Canvassers will be assigned certain areas of each riding, there will be a central site where people can go to sign a petition if they so choose. That site is the Professional Building 1705 Third Avenue. That site will be open to the public Tuesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday.

Let the dance begin!
Good luck to us!
I won't be back home until the 19th. Where do I go to cast my vote or will it be too late?
I think this anti-hst petition is the starting point of "the great push back".
This if nothing else will be a good show for the democratic process and a reminder to government that the power is with the people. I will be signing.
Carole James and her folly can not be too far out of sight in this. The NDP could provide themselves a real leg up by telling us what they would do as far as revenues and programs. The NDP should also get rid of James and they would be a lock for the next election.
I could not agree more about getting rid of Carol James. We need some like Mr. Dix. As for the petition, there is no way I'll sign it. If Vander Zalm is against it, it cannot be all bad. As for more tax, get over it, they need the money, hospitals and all the other services don't come free.
Who cares about the NDP, who leads it, or the next election? The issue right here and now is whether we want to have the HST or not.

I don't. If you do, then don't sign the Petition. Simple as that. Let the process begin, and we'll soon see what policy the majority of us really do want.

Funny thing though, for something that's supposed to be such a "done deal" there sure seem to be an awful lot of Liberals acting very nervously these days. Maybe, for once, "the people" are going to have the last word after all.
yeah for HST. its about time
The people involved in volunteering their time are the true patriots that make democracy work, and as such I salute them and their efforts.

I would urge everyone that wants politicians to respect the democratic process to sign this petition.
Pizzacook. They need the money???? According to who???? Is their need for money based on sound accounting principles, fiscal responsibility, and honesty and integrity???

You should take some time out and see what they are spending our money on, before you rush to the bank to get them some more.

The amount of money collected by the four levels of Government in BC is absolutely mind boggling. The amount of benefits we receive for this money in minimal.

Most people on these posts have been paying high taxes for years and years, and the time has bome to put a stop to it. This HST petition is a good beginning.
To Supertech and all others: There will be a place to sign the petition at 1705 3rd Ave. DOWNSTAIRS. The offce is going to be open Tuesday to Saturday at least thats the agenda right now. At this time no other locations are planned but that could change. For now that is where you can go to sign. Don't forget that if you have signed any other petitions around in the last few weeks pertaining to HST those have no bearing on the outcome of this campaign. The real petition is a very official looking form and you can only sign one time. They are going to scrutinize every single signature and toss any one not meeting the strict guidelines. So thats all for now. I really dont know much more we sure aint getting very much help from mainsteam media. I will continue to post what I can here. I am a volunteer canvasser so I can find out whats happening and will post it here.
Well said, Palopu. Pizzacook seems to be under the impression that the taxes we pay all 'directly' fund government services.

This, of course, would mean that we couldn't build any new 'public works', or even hold an Olympic games, or even pay the politicians and Civil Servants.

Not until the government had collected and saved enough 'money' in taxes to fund such things. Which is certainly NOT how governments are funded, or ever have been.

Governments borrow, and our taxes supposedly repay their borrowings. In reality, they generally only pay the interest on those borrowings. The principal sum is usually 'rolled over', as one debt issue is retired through the Government issuing a new one.

When a Government borrows for a new public works project, a road, or hospital, or bridge, or school, etc., or to hold an Olympic Games, the 'money' it receives is 'new credit' created by the Banks. Our monetary system, any monetary system actually, is "creditary". Bank loans create deposits, (not the other way around as many still believe), and the repayment of those loans cancels those deposits.

While Governments do sell bonds and other debt instruments to the general public, too, the overwhelming majority of government funding does NOT come from anyone's 'savings', but is "new credit" that will become 'money' just as if the Banks themselves printed it.

Now the effect of this is that as this 'new money' enters the economy ~ as it is distributed to pay for the project~ it INCREASES the prices of all goods and services for sale to the public NOW. The upper limit of 'price' is governed by the QUANTITY of 'money' avaialable, and the government's borrowing has increased that quantity.

Prices will rise until, collectively, they have absorbed ALL this 'new money'.

This collects back from the public, through these higher prices, ALL the 'new money' that has been distributed in respect of the project.

Leaving the 'cost' of that project to be paid for, through taxes, but the public without any 'money' from which to pay those taxes.

Unless, of course, MORE 'money' is created by, and borrowed from, the Banks. By the public, or again by the government, ostensibly for some other project. Which only repeats the process. Eventually, this becomes impossible. Of course, you won't hear the Banks complaining. They are the only ones profiting from the process, and the push for higher taxes. But even their profits will eventually be found to be more delusional than real.

Proper accounting would reveal this problem, and suggest a proper solution. Which is certainly NOT "more" or "higher" taxes.

It is interesting that the "so-called" main stream media are not reporting on this very closely. The liberals in the back room have to see what is happening here but the liberal leadrship arrogance and egos may be getting in the way. The thinkers behind the scenes of the liberal party have to be questioning the current leadership. If there are no changes soon, the NDP will walk to an easy majority government, come next election and the liberals can thank themselves.
Good one Palopu et all!
Well said!
And as socredible also said...this is not about the NDP.
It is not a political campain in terms of which party is better than the other.
It is about democracy...or a lack of!
It is also about a government by elected dictatorship.
Good to see the voters of B.C. finally stand up to a government that does not have the ability to listen...or care.
Go HST!
That's right, Andy. This is our opportunity to express what is really the essence of 'freedom' itself ~ each individual's ability to choose, or refuse, one thing at a time. Simply by signing, (or refusing to sign, if that is your choice), the Petition. And to do it within the Law, as it presently exists.

It's not about which "party" or "leader" we'd sooner have in office. This issue cuts clear across the political spectrum. There are no "party" or ideological lines dividing us on this. Bill Vander Zalm, Carole James, Mike Summers, and every other past or present politician, or even future hopeful ones, are simply all just 'citizens' here.

If we are successful in securing the number of valid signatures we hope to secure, Mr. Campbell and his Party can determine from that whether or not they want to "represent" US. Or continue to represent the wishes of "FINANCE" TO us.
The pseudo-indignant cries of 'no democracy' are just a smokescreen for people's hatred for Gordon Campbell. I'm not a fan of the guy personally, but there are some people on this site who have a hatred so deep that they don't want to make sense of anything.

I can't think of anybody anywhere who would vote for a new (or re-structured) tax, no matter what the justification. Unpopular decisions are part of government. If you believe you can do a better job, get a platform and run for MLA. I might even vote for you.

I'm all for the petition campaign, although I won't be signing. The petition to me is more about 'democracy' than all the hand-wringing / chicken little talk over the HST.
Not sure what it is your trying to say Mr PG, however I for one have on previous occasions voted for the present Government. The fact that I wont again for sometime to come is because of what they are doing tax wise and otherwise.

Concealing the real intent of this tax prior to the last election, then springing it on us. Trying to spin it off that it is a good tax, when in fact it is bloody terrible. Trying to imply that those Corporations that benefit from their tax reduction will somehow convey a cost saving to the consumers is a blatant misrepresentation of what is actually happening.

This whole situation is a result of the Liberals making a tax grab, and hoping it would go through with little or not problem. They have foisted themselves on their own petard, and they can pay the price.

You reap what you sow.
All down through our history people have voted "for" new taxes when they can clearly see that the intent of the tax is for some good purpose, Mr. PG. That we are actually getting something beneficial to us for the income foregone,(because ALL modern taxes are payable in 'money', they are ALL based ultimately on 'income'.)

This is most evident at the local level, where various tax levies are already often decided by Referendum. (And, yes, people DO often vote FOR new taxes in them.) But it also extends to the higher levels of government as well.

But at those higher levels we have a very real problem. It becomes much more difficult for us to see just what we are paying for, how much, and what we've actually 'got' afterwards. Accounting through a "Budget" alone just doesn't cut it. We really need a complete set of "books", similar to the accounts kept by EVERY private Company, to see where we stand. And we need that before we have ANY MORE TAXES imposed on us. We can only get that if enough people take the first step, and sign the Petition.
"All down through our history people have voted "for" new taxes when they can clearly see that the intent of the tax is for some good purpose, Mr. PG. "

Can you remind of the last time this happened at the Provincial or Federal levels?
