Prince George, B.C.-  The final bill for the 2010 Olympic Torch Celebration has been presented to City Council.

According to the report, the late January party cost $62,071.00

Of that amount,  all but $2,701.00 was covered by grants:
·        Federal Government $15,000
·        Provincial Government $40,000
·        Miscellaneous Grant     $ 4,370.00

The City was left to pick up just $2,701.00 "That is considerably less than the $50 thousand  Council had budgeted last year for this event" says Councillor Sherri Green

Using similiar phraseology as council member Green, I would say the olympics also gave "considerably less" to the north.
I just love how the spin doctors work. This is how I see it;

15,000.00 by the tax payers
40,000.00 by the tax payers
2,700.00 by the tax payers

Now if each town spent this amount then WE THE TAX PAYERS were paid for all of those to. I wonder what the total bill was for all across the country? I bet that information would make our heads spin.

Everyone bend over and do not make a squeek!
So true IMO
well said IMO!!! thank you!!!
Thanks to the organizers for a great evening and for keeping the costs down. Much appreciated by most of the citizens of this city. I have yet to hear anything negative about the event - except of course from most of the people who write into O250.
Anyone else find it interesting that these numbers come out the day after the government workers were cut yesterday?

Looks like we can't afford to keep people employed now that bills are coming in for the big two week party.
Thanks to the organizers for a great evening and for keeping the costs down.

Are you serious? $62,000.00 for an evening?? And this happened every day for 3 months at numerous cities and towns. I do not call this "keeping the costs down!"

Extreme spending in a time of recession on the backs of the hard working tax payers is what I call it!

IMO well said! That is exactly who paid for this EXPENSIVE PARTY for the rich!
Even better said Municca!!! Thank you! Those few hours cost more than what most make in a year. Just think what that money could have been used for...OH, don't get me started.
you all complain about the money that is being spent, and then if you don't spend it, then you complain, oh theres nothing to do. Grow up.
Does anybody have the numbers for how much money Canada is spending on *fixing up* the quarters for the upcoming visit of the Queen?

How many hundred grand?

Apparently all the toilets and washbasins have to be ripped out & replaced because they are not up to royal expectations.

Unimagenable, isn't it?

How much money to we usually spend on Royal visits and to give lavish parties for visiting foreign dignitaries?

Now, it is my conviction that if we can afford all THAT largesse - we can afford to hold our own party once every couple of decades or so!

It was great, or was for us and by us!

Stop whining and griping!

Well said PrinceGeorge!
We should not be paying anything for the Queen and her cohorts to come here. If they want to see us, she should pay for it herself. I don't get my vacations paid for.

As far as the big waste better known as the "Owelympics" what did we get, other than the bill shoved up our wazoo? Oh, I forgot, a few people got to run with fire in their hands.
hey duffer, I got a few pictures as well. And the memories... we cant forget those...

Although I have to admit that at the time I was pretty impressed. It was one sweet fireworks display. But I do remember wondering at the time how much it would have cost to put on such a show.

IMO you certainly have it right. The elected dictatorships we have these days seem to forget where they get 'their' money from.
As soon as they get to office it becomes time to do as they please. (at least until the next election approaches)
The total means nothing. Where do I see the break down of the spending?
Was the money spent on advertising, food, fuel, travel, policing?
Really now. We all know the taxpayer funded the entire program. I want to know WHAT I paid for.
62 grand for 4 hours ... Nice

more than what most people in this city make in a year ...but not really that important if you think about it

I too would like to see the breakdown ...Compare it to the # people that actually attended ... I thought it was speculated but cannot recall the number

I expect the fireworks display to be the majority of the cost to be honest with you ... all the freebies were corporate sponsored ... and alot of cost would have re-couped by the sale of merchandise (those silly mascots etc ...for 20 some dollars a peice)

Other than fireworks .. the cost would have have been transport and lodging
so wat is the city gonna do with the other 47 grr that was earmarked ... perhaps fix a few potholes with it
$63 large for bread and a circus. One day after gov't layoffs all around the 250 area code. Question of priorities?
Who was it that said, there's only one taxpayer?
The nerve of the government. Of course, we should all be sitting in our homes with the lights off and freezing in the dark.
