Prince George, B.C.- This Saturday, the rubber hits the road.   That is, it will be on its way to a recycling facility in Delta.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and Tire Stewardship BC are looking to gather up and recycle old tires that have been stacked in garages and yards around Prince George. This is a special one day event which welcomes you to drop off old car and light truck tires (inside diameter of less than 16.5 inches) free of charge.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to dispose of old tires in a responsible way,” says Rachael Ryder, Waste Diversion Program Leader with the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

“Tire Round Up is a free service, and the tires that are collected will be recycled and used in a variety of products including playground safety surfacing, athletic tracks, synthetic turf fields and much more.”

The Tire Round up will be held Saturday at the CN Centre parking lot from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Retailers collect an Advance Disposal Fee from you when you buy new tires. That fee is then given to Tire Stewardship BC, a not-for-profit society formed to manage BC's tire recycling
program. The fees are used to pay for transporting and recycling scrap tires in BC.

Tire Stewardship BC says each year, they recycle 40,000 tonnes of tires.

Last year, they reached a significant milestone, having recycled their 50 millionth tire. That's enough tires that if laid flat, rubber to rubber, would encircle the Earth at the equator.

Yeah, and they're perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes when they fill up with rainwater !! Lets get as many of them gone as we can as soon as possible.
Will they accept tires that are still on rims? I've got a few of those.

Good point "metalman", I'd hate to take my tires down there and then find out they don't take them. At landfill they definately won't take the tire if the rim is still on. I really doubt it but it sure would be nice to know for sure. My husband has a whole stack of tires that I'd love to get rid of.
I have heard that they will take the tires on rims at the tire round up so long as they fit the size requirement (inside diameter has to be less than 16.5 inches)
I would be suprised if they take them on rims, normally the tires go directly into a shredder when offloaded, and rims dont get along very well with the shredders.

Could be wrong, but thats my gut feeling.
they would recycle the rims separately and benefit from any money generated from the steel recycling.
I assume they melt the rubber off anyway?? Steel belted tires are next to impossible to shred
The tires are shredded, steel belted and bias, I have seen the shredder, pretty impressive machine.

Of course the rubber has to be removed from the rim before it goes into the shredder, but I was hoping that I would not have to pay a tire shop to do it.
I just called Kal Tire, they charge $7.00 per tire to 'dismount' which is fair, but if, like me, you have six or seven of them that are junk, the price gets a little too high. You could leave the tires at the tire shop, they don't mind, and take the rims to a scrap dealer, but at the current price of seven cents per pound for prepared steel, there is no payback.
