Prince George, B.C.- Thirty one North District RCMP officers will be honoured today as being part of “Alexa’s Team” in recognition of their efforts to get impaired drivers off the roads.

“Alexa’s Team” was formed in remembrance of 4 year old Alexa Middelaer who died in May of 2008. Alexa  was struck by a vehicle driven by an person suspected of being impaired at the time. The vehicle left the road in Delta, hitting Alexa, her aunt and a parked vehicle before coming to rest on a power pole. The driver has since been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm and death.

Alexa’s Team recognizes officers who have forwarded to Crown at least 10 full impaired driving charges in addition to issuing 24 hour prohibitions and Administrative Driving Prohibitions.

Last year, the 175 members of the “team”   forwarded charges against 2,873 drivers, issued more than 5 thousand 24 hour prohibitions and nearly 12 hundred Administrative Driving Prohibitions.

5000 times people were deemed guilty without a trial or any form of 'innocent until proven guilty'. IMO you either charge them with an impaired and give them their day in court (presumably after a breathalyzer test), or you let them go. We should be a country of laws and not an officers opinion.

The 24-hour issue based purely on an officers opinion and no way for a person to clear the record should be considered a violation of a persons right to a fair hearing to address any charges that would go on a permanent record. Its a system designed for abuse by the police and does nothing for public safety.

Eagle One, do you really want all Police officers to formally charge everyone they suspect of an offense of any kind?
That's where it would end up you know, if officers were not permitted to use their discretion. Look at this way; 5,000 roadside suspensions = 5,000 possibly impaired drivers off the road, I like those odds.

Eagleone, what an ass you are. If you knew anything about the law you would know that any driver who is being issued a 24 hrs suspension has the right on the spot to request that he be given a breath test. Its the law. Many drivers now are tested with an ASD roadside. If you smoke some dope you can be suspended also. An experienced officer is way more apt than you are to judge who is impaired by drug or alcohol...the key is to get these people off the road and keep them from killing someone. Many people prefer a 24 hrs suspension instead of a 365 day one.
