Prince George, B.C. Opinion250 got plenty of phone calls and emails about a Sunday afternoon fire on a property near the Prince George Airport.

Not only were the flames spectacular, but some who contacted us witnessed the arrival of a Conservation Officer who seemed to have a particular interest in the fire.

Turns out, someone had called the Ministry of Environment to complain about a house being intentionally burned. That would be a possible violation under environmental laws in the region as there might have been dangerous substances being released into the air.
A Conservation Officer did attend the scene, but quickly learned it was a controlled “practice” burn on Airport lands.    C.O. Gary Van Spangen says there was nothing being done that was in contravention of any regulations “So sometimes things are not what they seem, but we have to check it out anyway.”

Controlled burn or not, Dan Moore has submitted some great photos, which we think deserve to be shared. ( at right, flames  create a wall of fire, photo submitted by Dan Moore)

These wood stoves have got to stop poluting our air. Oh, maybe it's road dust. But never a controled burn.
Thats all the media can take away from this...? How about the invaluable training that those firefighters recieved? The skills thoses firefighters learned from doing that controled burn will help them respond in a real emergency. I cannot believe that a complaint is the only thing that has been brought to the public!!! The public needs to see that the benifits far outweight the negatives. To allow firefighters the oppertunity to see a fire develop under controled circumstances, and be coached through the proper application of water in a burning building is a skill that cannot be honned in a classroom.
