“The Tyranny of the Majority”

When I first decided to run for political office, I can’t say I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into.

I knew for certain that it is one of the highest honours possible to represent my fellow constituents in Ottawa and to advance my views on how to make this nation stronger and better.

I knew that maintaining the trust and confidence of my constituents would require long hours, hard work and sacrifice, not only for me, but my family.  And while I couldn’t fully comprehend it until I experienced it, I understood and accepted that I would be held to account for everything I do and I would be subject to varying degrees of public scrutiny for my actions, both public and private.

Nevertheless, I CHOSE all that comes with being a politician.  My staff did not.

Throughout the past several weeks, using their majority on parliamentary committees, the opposition parties have set aside due process and fair play to conduct random “interrogations” of Ministers’ staff members on a variety of subjects.

These actions reject the fundamental principle of Ministerial accountability in our parliamentary system.  Ministers are ultimately accountable and answerable to Parliament for government policies, decisions and operations.  Staff members are accountable to their Minister.

Our Government fully recognizes the need and authority of Parliamentary committees to call for persons or papers as they carry out their work.  However, these are not merely “fact finding” sessions by committee members to seek further detail or clarification on a government program or policy, such as when senior public servants might appear before a committee.
Ministers’ staff who have appeared before committee have been subjected to aggressive, adversarial questioning and downright bullying.  They have been denied the accompanying support of their Ministers; they have been denied the opportunity to give an opening statement, something normally granted to committee witnesses; and, they have been threatened by opposition MPs with contempt of Parliament through the media.

Even during the largest political scandal in Canadian history; the Liberal sponsorship scandal, where millions of dollars were stolen or mysteriously disappeared, Parliamentary committees at the time demanded Ministerial accountability.  Ministers were seen as responsible and answerable for the actions of their staff.

In the absence of any respect for fair play and parliamentary tradition, I delivered a Ministerial Statement this week, as Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, to give formal notice that our Government will stand up for Ministerial staff, who did not sign on to being humiliated and intimidated by MPs.

Ministerial staff members will no longer appear when called before Parliamentary committees.  Instead, Ministers will appear before committee when required to account for a staff member’s actions.

In response to one staff member refusing to appear at committee this week, opposition MPs on that committee voted to give the Liberal chair unprecedented, sweeping powers to summon any individuals he chooses via subpoena.

Attempts to score political points at all costs are consuming the work of our parliamentary committees rather than serving the need of Canada and Canadians.  We cannot allow this “tyranny of the majority” to continue unchecked.

Blah! Blah! Blah!
The truth of the matter is that this would be another tool in the hands of harpo to silence and control Government. Quite contrary to his election stand to be open and honest!
They aren't playing nice, but perhaps if you gave them the information in the first place (information that SHOULD be public), your staff wouldn't have to face this.

How much were your expenses? How many sessions are you attending?

I know we read earlier in the week that your expenses were high, understandable, giving the vast region you serve.

Why not show the breakdown? It is, after all, taxpayers funds. Not showing the details implies there is something to hide.
"Even during the largest political scandal in Canadian history; the Liberal sponsorship scandal, where millions of dollars were stolen or mysteriously disappeared,..."

The culprits were found out and put in jail.

Can't say the same thing about the Mulroney/Airbus/Schreiber scandal. It ranks in my opinion as the largest political scandal in recent Canadian history. Inspite of millions of dollars of taxpayers spent on an inquiry there is still a whole pile of unanswered questions remaining.

It also turned me off with politicians in general and the PC Party in particular.

And now the 72 hour G8/G20 party, frittering away 1,100 x 1 million dollars when the whole party could have been held on an aircraft carrier within sight of lovely Vancouver Island, accompanied by a submarine and a missile cruiser.

Total safety and militarily enforced security at a cost of not more than a few million dollars tops.

Mr. Hill, speak up and question this monumental PC waste of your constituents' taxes!

...and, once again, not a word about the implementation of the HST despite weeks and weeks of publicity against it from those who elected him.
Why is it necessary to spend that kind of money on security, unless it's to ensure what's been planned behind closed doors stays behind closed doors? WHO established the "Plan" these "leaders" will all be TOLD there to get out and sell to us? That's what WE should be asking. For it certainly wasn't them. They're all about as hapless as Jay Hill on his first day on Parliament Hill.
There'll never be a word about THAT, ammonra. Mr. Hill's too busy resisting the "Tyranny of the Majority" to ever listen to the "majority" in his own riding and throughout the rest of BC.
I think the conservative party is only in power because of the rigid control that they have exerted on their staffers and MP's. As evidenced in the Jaffer/Guernis (sp?) affair, Harper is quick to quash any appearances of malfeasance as soon as it becomes public.

Harper is running a one man show, more or less. If he were to get hit by a bus, are there any other MP's that would be able to step up?

Finally, by running a one man show, (no offence meant) he is violating Parliamentary tradition, and by appointing 18 Senators, is only held in check now by his minority government.

Do we want a King Harper? We're uncomfortably close to it, and that is my problem with the conservatives.
whine, whine, whine
Very intelligent!
to clarify my comment, it is to the posters. If everyone is concerned about costs what about the the huge globull warming money grabbing scam. At least this goverment is stepping lightly, seeing the scam for what it is.
In regards to the 1.3 BILLION....I repeat BILLION dollars. There is a very good solution to the safety of these people and that is, sit in your freaking office and TELECONFERENCE YOUR MEETING. HELLO!! It is the 21st century. Stop wasting money the REAL CANADIANS worked hard for. I have a picture of our LORD AND MASTER Harper sitting with the Bilderberg group one short year before he became priminister and I tell you that there is something seriously wrong with this whole picture. But time will tell….
Shhhh...I think I hear a duck farting in shallow water!
Nope! Not a fart - just Harpo making another senator!
Again, Hill shows that he represents not his constituents to the government, but he represtents the will of the Harper regime to us peasants at home.
Democracy is dead in Canada

I'm SummerSoul, and this is just SummerSoul's opinion.
To much why we want you in is beyond me
