Prince George, B.C. - “We Are Winter” that is the City of Prince George theme for its bid to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Amid displays of well lit snow flakes, and sporting event posters, the Prince George Bid Committee outlined some of its plans for the Games to members of the public last night. “We are still in a competitive environment with two other communities who I am sure have put together very good bid packages,” says Mayor Dan Rogers, “But this is an opportunity for us to share as much as we can about what the expectations are, what the community can expect, and give the community an opportunity to get involved.”

In  competition with Kamloops and Kelowna, Prince George is doing everything it can to make sure the games are held in P.G.. “One of the big pieces that is an attraction to get these games is the opportunity get Federal and Provincial money to help build our infrastructure” says Les Waldie, co-chair of the Games bid committee.

There is a total of about a $19 million dollar capital infrastructure improvement associated with the Games, most of that money would be spent on the Kin Centres. The City will get about $6 million dollars of that from the two senior levels of government, and the  City will be expected to come up with about $11 million, a further $1.5 million would be raised privately.

Will the expenditure for the Games be a tough sell? Waldie says the boost to the   regional economy will be significant “We think that getting an opportunity to have a $70 to $90 million dollar influx into this community is really important and really worthwhile. If we want to get that, we are going to need to spend some money to do it. The plus of course is that this will be a legacy that will last long past the Games.”

The Games will bring together more than 3,400 athletes from over 800 communities across Canada. There will be 19 national caliber sport competitions and 120 thousand visitors over the 17 days of competition.

There is another facet to the Games, the cultural aspect. The Games will bring 39 participants with the National Artist Program, and Waldie says Prince George may just borrow some of the entertainment type events experienced by the folks who visited Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics.

The Evaluation Committee for the games will visit Prince George August 9th. While the visit will primarily look at facilities and the overall plan for the Games, Waldie says the Committee will also be looking to see how residents view the Games “They need to see that this City is behind this. So we’re asking people to sign up, saying if we get the Games, I’m prepared to volunteer. If we can demonstrate that to the Evaluation Committee we know that is going to be really helpful.”

The    Bid Committee has already set up a page on Facebook ( www.facebook.com/pg2015 ) and is hoping to see plenty of people sign up to be a future volunteer. You can sign up at the Four Seasons Pool, Aquatic Centre, P.G. Library or at the City Hall Service Centre.

I hope Rossignol provided some financial assistance to have their logo left on the bottom of the skiis for the poster.
As well as the Citizen, of course, for the display of their name on the boards.
Only eleven million dollars to provide such grand benefits for our fair city! Yeah, and benefits for whom. Will our tax rates rise, yet again for this party? Will the cost be added to our growing joint debt?
Will much-needed repairs to crumbling infrastructure be postponed, yet again, paving the way to future "public-private-partnerships" to provide profit for construction companies that will no longer even have to be local?
Are we suckers? A rhetorical question.

I'm SummerSoul and this is just SummerSoul's opinion.
I cannot believe that we would pay so much in tax dollars for games. My grandfather - rest his soul - would think that was just nuts!
It's not just here in PG - its all sports in general. The millions it costs for Olympics and winter games, summer games...... these things are getting out of hand.
Perhaps we need to re-think our priorities!
Pretty hard to have the wintergames in a city with no curling rink.. If the city doesnt do something about the constant changing of whats allowed to be done with the Golf Course land then why even bid.
Referendum...only fair way to decide this.
In my opinion it is called special interest groups with loud mouths and connections...
It would be great to get the games, but not at that cost! let Kamloops or Kelowna suck up that!
The Games would be the greatest thing that has ever happen in PG.

I for one loudly and proudly support the Games in PG in 2015.
Quit spending money when we are in debt! These are things you do when there is a surplus. Prince George has not been in a SURPLUS for years now. Reign in SPENDING!
6 against
1 pro
2 undeclared

This mini referendum/poll indicates a trend to oppose the winter games in PG.
This would be the best thing to ever happen in our city. The amount of provincial and federal dollars (yes, our tax dollars) being given to the winning city for infrastructure will be huge. 1 of the 3 cities is getting this money, it might as well be ours. I'm tired of Kelowna, Kamloops, etc. getting all the good stuff. If we don't support this bid, it will go to 1 of them. Sign up as a volunteer!!!
really, then where is my owlypic cheque. the only "good thing" is one that puts dollars in my pockets. I could care less if my town gets a sporting venue that I will rarely if ever use. I could care less if our wastrel elected leaders get to schmooze.

The owlypics good thing came and went, my income remained the same and my expenses went up due to HST, carbon offset lie, hydro went up, and terrasen is just raping my a$$.

Please, without rhetoric or propaganda explain how pissing away another $20 or $30 million dollars (you know their budget will only be valid till tomorrow) of taxpayer funds on a party that I cannot attend but must pay for is a good thing. Please explain how this will improve my quality of life, or how this will feed my kids or pay their education.

The only supporters of these events seem to be business owners, most private citizens are becoming more and more reluctant to support these events. Why is that? I think it is because government spends millions and billions to "companies" and "corporations" to build the infrastructure on taxpayers dime, but private citizens cannot attend, it is not even broadcast on local TV. Mean while, nothing on the home front improves, schools are closed, we have inadequately staffed hospitals, and the basic infrastructure of roads and sewage systems are falling apart from age and lack of maintenance. Priorities man, priorities!

It is my fervent hope that not only does PG decline this partisan folly, but also the other city's in the running. Cancel the whole works.
Well said Loki, totally agree, cancel the whole works!!! Don't let Kamloops or Kelowna get it! Don't let anyone get it. What a waste of taxpayers money!
What winter and exactly how do we know which 2 weeks winter will be at that date??
