Bear Season About to Get Busy

Prince George, B.C.- The month of June is the worst time in the spring season for bear complaints in Prince George.   According to the Conservation Officer Service, as of June 1 there have been 140 black bear complaints and 8 grizzly complaints, with 4 black bears having to be destroyed.

The Northern Bear Awareness Society (NBAS) is reminding residents of Prince George to ensure that their garbage is properly managed. During the week,  keep garbage inside a shed, in your garage or in your basement, and not outside where the bears can access it. If you have waste that is particularly smelly, such as bones, prawn shells, etc, NBAS suggests that you put them in the freezer until the day of garbage pick-up to minimize the smell.

One of the most important reminders is to put your garbage container out the day of garbage pick-up and not the evening before. Bears who are simply passing through your neighbourhood during the night won't be able to resist knocking your can over to find out what's inside.

Garbage is the number one backyard bear attractant, with birdseed following as a close second in the springtime (with fruit being a major attractant in the fall).

NBAS also strongly recommends residents take down their bird feeders for the spring and summer months, as there is plenty for them to eat at this time of year. If you would still like to attract birds to your yard during bear season, they suggest installing a bird bath for your feathered friends instead.

Drill a screw into the front of the can and a bungy cord to secure the lid... if they can't get the lid open they will eventually give up on your garbage can. It works.
If you think that will keep a hungry bear out of your garbage can, dream on. I've seen what a hungry bear does to a locked car door - peels it back like tin foil.
Amen to that Imorge!
Saw a car with the front windshield busted out to get in!
He just climbed up and bounced on it I guess.
Poof!...no more windshield and a bear in your car!
They can be very resourceful animals.
Was that a bear that broke the windshield or did Gordon Campbell see some spare change in the ashtray that he just had to have?
There was a big black bear in the Hart Highlands today climbing over fences into back yards.

I don't think it had anything to do with Gordon Campbell though. Sorry, faxman.
Well, I've had many attempts on my garbage can and they have yet to get my lid open. I use to come home and my garbage was all over the yard... since I added the strong black short bungy cord they can't get the lid open... it works... I live across from the garbage dump, so I have garbage dump bears on a regular basis, and not one to date has got the bin lid on my garbage can open, and not for lack of trying.

I had a new bear earlier this week that was furiously trying to get it open fighting with my bin all over the yard with no success. They can't get their paws under the lid to tear it open and they can't bite through the plastic of the bin. So far I have a 100% success rate in keeping them out since I added my securement device. It definitely works.
When you see that BIG black bear phone me--I'm looking for a nice spring hide for my den.
