20 000 unemployed in this city?
20,000? You're saying that there is at least 50% unemployment in PG? Not sure where you get these numbers from. DowntownChris, he was talking about numbers of people going on welfare changing, not what welfare pays out changing. I still say, there sure seems to be a lot of traffic going somewhere virtually every hour of the day and stores that are crammed full constantly. When did the recession happen? Bottom line, if you're working there is no recession, if you're laid off, then you may think there is a recession. The only people feeling a recession are those who had high paying jobs they thought were going to last forever (in the forest industry in particular) and lived well beyong thier means all the time. Now reality has come and bit them on the ass.
acopoolympics, people are hurting, stores are not crammed!that just people at tim hortons, thats where everone goes to socialize.why are so many bussiness going under? have u seen the recent foreclosures?does that tell a tale?
With the mill closures a lot of the older workers may have left for a better life elsewhere and the younger generation is getting an opportunity to fill their jobs as they come back on line... I would bet the city population still declined again this year though....
Just about everyone I know is retired. Even the 54 year old who was out of work when NCP burned and is on EI. Whoever supplies this EI info is way out of whack. If people no longer qualify for EI that doesn't make them employed. To the feds: Please do an honest and accurate count of unemployment or just shut up about it.
