Prince George, B.C. - The Director of Marketing for the Prince George Airport says the Airport Authority is not at all surprised to hear that China Eastern Airlines will begin a nonstop daily flight from Vancouver to Shanghai.

Premier Campbell and China Eastern made the announcement Monday .

Tod Doherty says there has been a local demand in Vancouver given the fact that one of the largest Asian populations in Canada lives in Vancouver. They have a natural market he said, “We don’t have that kind of population to have a passenger service but we can say that Cargo and refuelling is an entirely different matter and we are constantly in discussion with the airline including China Eastern who was just in the city."

So what other airlines are on this "radar"?

Where are the traffic controllers operating the radar? Not in YXS's tower I assume.
Come on guys give the airport people a break. We have already had 2 planes land here. Works out to about 1 every 4 months. We don't need to overtax the system and wear out the runway.
I only wish my tax rate would go up so I could contribute even more to another foolish taxpayer funded venture.
ON the radar. Doesn't mean s*&t. On the tarmack is another thing. Get them on the tarmack.
There are no plans on the radar...just in the delusional minds of a few, my opion of course...
why would airlines change their flight paths just to accomodate Prince George?
I think those that we had land here are the exception not the rule...
I still wonder how much was paid to the aircargo flight to land here in the first place?
they would not change their flight paths. if a cargo ship were going to chicago, miami or other US eastern seaboard destinations prince george would be on the way.
Two or three weeks ago there was a (largely unreported!) near collision at Anchorage Airport.

A passenger jet with 142 passengers on board missed a cargo jet just taking off (it was dark at the time) by not more than 30 meters.

Perhaps it is an advantage not to be too overloaded with planes landing and taking off simultaneously...
I was at the airport last week during the early evening and it was dead.If we are pinning our hopes on this place being an economic driving force,I have my doubts about it.I really hope I am wrong as I would like Prince George to become the best little city in B.C.,but I have a feeling this is going to be another project along the same lines as downtown revitalization, where we are still discussing it 10,20 years from now.
The PG Airport has approx one plane taking off and landing per hour. They actually close the Aiport around midnight and reopen around 7am.

Even if they got the 4 Cargo Planes per week they are hoping to get so that they can break even on their operating costs, 4 planes a week is so insignificant that it would make no differance to the overall operation.

Anchorage handles 700 Wide Body Cargo Jets per week in addition to regular passenger flights, and domestic flights. Its probably the 3rd of 4th busiest Airport in North America.

For Prince George to compete against them would be like Pee Wee Herman, going up against Mike Tyson.
They should probably shut the airport down, strip it and see what they can sell.

Palopu curious where the numbers 4 and 700 came from?
Hood. The Aiport Authoritys 2009 Annual Report showed an operating loss of $300,000.00. The airport Manager stated that if they could get 4 Cargo Aircraft per week to stop in Pr George for refueling this would generate enough revenue for them to break even.

If you look up Ted Stevens International Airport (Anchorage Intl Airport) and look at their stats you will see that they handle 700 Large Body Cargo Jets per week, in addition to Intl Passenger and Domestic Flights.

Companies like DHL, FEDEX, UPS, JAL, China Airlines etc; all have huge warehouse and sorting facilities in Anchorage. In addition hundreds of Airline Pilots live in Anchorage and fly these Jets to and from Asia, and the Continental USA.
"They actually close the Aiport around midnight and reopen around 7am."

Actually you have that wrong. There is a 6am flight, so they are prepared to take customers at 5am or even earlier.

The last flight at night comes in around midnight, depending on how well the connections in Vancouver worked.
So how many of the whiners about the airport or boundary road or the bio-energy plant or or or are the same whiners who says PG has to diversify?
Could not North Central Raceway conduct their drag races on our new under used runways? Schedule the races around flight arrivals and departures. Charge admission to offset costs. The airport would be closer to town than out on Chief Lake Road. Coming back from Las Vegas many years ago, I asked the stewardess to tell the pilot to just look for the windsock next to the potato field and that would be Prince George. (I was kidding, of course).
Interceptor. Building dead end projects with taxpayer money is not exactly diversifing.

If you can show me where these projects will actually create some new jobs, I am all ears.

1. The Airport Authority has actually downsized by approx 20 jobs since it was set up in 2003.

2. The Bio Energy plant when and if it is built will be run by the staff at Lakeland, and I doubt if many new jobs would be created. If they use the hog fuel at Lakeland then there will less trucking to the Pulp Mill which would mean a reduction in jobs.

3. When Boundry Road is completed, I suspect that they will build a new light industrial park West of the Airport. This park will attract business from the BC Rail Industrial Park, Danson Industrial Park, Carter Light, and other light industrial parks in Pr George. Once these firms relocate and shut down their present locations, you will end up with no new business.

So the construction of these bogus sites creates short term jobs, however once the construction is done, we end up with nothing.

No new jobs at the Airport
No new jobs at Bio Energy Plant\
No new jobs at the light industrial park.

and therefore no diversification.

Have a nice day.
