Prince George, B.C.- The fight HST   group in the Prince George region has sent a letter to the Federal Minister of Finance, Jim Flaherty, calling on him to delay the implementation of the harmonized sales tax.
In a letter sent today, Regional Organizer Mike Summers writes:
Dear Minister,

As you are aware, the citizens of BC have collected an astounding 600,000 signatures, representing over 15% in each of the 85 constituencies.

That petition demands that the Government of BC introduce legislation to withdraw the agreement with the federal government, or take it to a referendum.

We respectfully ask you to honour the wishes of the people and delay implementation of HST pending validation and final vote in any referendum which may subsequently be called.

I need not remind you that this is only fair to voters who have long supported Conservative members and who seek a democratic response from government.

And, it will add to the stability of business in BC which will be asked to shift tax collection methods one way, only to have them shifted back upon successful referendum in September 2011.

At that time. the government will be obligated to repay consumers in BC and it will likely result in a breaking of the bank.

For that reason, I adjure you to put off implementation of the HST pending final resolution of the petition.

Sincerely,
Mike Summers

The HST is to take effect July 1st in B.C. and in Ontario

Ha ha ha , you overtaxed rubes. Get back to work and pay those taxes. We have a country to run.
Thank you Mike for writing the letter in behalf of all of us. :}
Hmm, I got my Shaw cable bill today and guess what? Those bastards charged me HST on my bill. I urge everyone to check your cable bill for the same.
Yes thanks Mike. Pretty sad when we are the employer and the employee tells us where to go. Something is sure wrong here. Keep pounding the table Bell.
Well its off to Alberta to pick up the larger items and a good shopping trip couple of times a year.
not to mention the tax break that the state of Washington is going to give us!!! I guess it is now buy American...
When there is a big oil job around Ft. St. John guess where the company will buy all its supplies from?
I read an article in a vancouver newspaper that states all the fight undertaken to halt the HST is flawed because they keep harping on the province to repeal it. The author states that the HST is a federal law and BC'ers can do nothing to stop it, unless the feds repeal it. I hope all the work done on this has been for naught.
You hope all the work done has been for naught?? Is that an error in sentence structure or do you actually like the idea of HST (tax on everything)??
ok if u didn't catch my drift...I fear that all the work done to stop the HST may not work at all.
I am not defending the HST but think the record should be straight...just so we know. (and I believe that I have my information right on this)

The federal Liberals brought in the HST legislation when they were in power. There were a couple of provinces that took them up on it and installed an HST in their province.

It was then open to all provinces and the legislation is still on the books.

If ANY federal government refused to allow any other province to implement the HST, there would be an immediate Constitutional challenge claiming that the federal government was treating some provinces different from other. Any federal government would LOSE this challenge.

Likewise, ANY federal government that sought to recind the HST legislation, would also find themselves in a Constitutional challenge, which they would lose as well.

So we are sort of in a conundrum (sp?) here in BC that can only be solved by the provincial Liberals withdrawing their intention to implement the HST.

The federal government simply cannot do it and the federal government that orignially brought in the HST legislation made sure that it could not be overturned by any subsequent government.

So its up to Campbell, always has been, always will be.....
The federal government, namely Steven Harper and the Conservatives, should pay attention to the number of signatures gathered on the anti-HST petition.
600,000 more or less.
That's one hell of a lot of votes Steven Harper and his party are probably not getting in the next federal election.
Seems politicians just can't see any farther than the noses on their faces!
Andyfreeze......You will notice that in my explanation, I tried to explain it from a non-political point of view, and deal entirely with the facts of the HST issue.

I am amazed that you chose not to comment on my explanation (perhaps because it is factual), and instead jump right into a political rant, which in my opinion has tainted your opinion on the issue because your ideological straitjacket has shielded you from "just the plain facts"

What was it about my explanation that you either didn't understand or disagreed with.

That comment would be refreshing I think.
gimmeabreak. Any Province can get out of the HST agreement with the Federal Government. In the case of BC and I beleive Ontario they have to give the Federal Government 5 years notice. That is the agreement that is on the books at this point in time. This does not mean that the Province and the Feds could not come to some other agreement. In point of fact the HST was brought in in Saskatchewan in 1991 by the Conservatives, who then lost the election in 1992 and the NDP withdrew the HST. So there is precedence.

You have to keep in mind that those people who want to have the HST will go to any length to convince people it is a done deal, and nothing can be done. This is nothing more than thinly diaquised propaganda.

The HST stands to make billions of dollars for business and large corporations, and therefore they will do whatever is necessary to convince you it is a good thing. However it isnt.

Because of the timeline involved here the Anti-HST people have to take further action to get this tax killed immediately, because if they are still arguing going into an election in 2013 then it is all over. Even if the NDP get elected they would not recind the HST, the best they would do would be to give the Federal Government the 5 year notice to drop out of the agreement, however this is highly unlikely.

So where are we.

A. We have the Liberal who want the HST implemented asap, and have this issue go away.

B. We have the NDP, who if they formed the Government would not exactly break their ass to get rid of this tax.

C. We have the ability to recall the Premier and Hansen in November, hoping that by putting this pressure on them they will kill this tax.

D. We must keep the pressure on or they will kick the S..t out of us.

E. Because anyone can start a petition to recall an MLA, there is the possibility that a number will be started in November and if more than 7 are successful, then the Liberals are out of Government. My sense is that they will not want to go down that road, so I expect that they will recind this tax in the very near future, however they will not do so if we back off.

So I suggest that everyone write a letter to Gordon Campbell with a copy to Colin Hansen, Pat Bell, Shirley Bond, and Rustad, and tell them ((TELL THEM)) to recind this tax or they will be recalled.

In addition I suggest that when you receive the propaganda in the mail in July from the Provincial Government telling you what a good tax this is, that you mark the envelope **return to sender** and drop it in the mailbox. If enough people did this it would give them a good indication of how people feel.

Have a nice day.
