Prince George- A 29 year old, Yukon man has died as a result of the rollover of a Pickup truck on Highway 97, 2 kilometers north of the Salmon Valley Road, Sunday night at 8.00pm.

Police say the truck was travelling south when it left the roadway, rolling into the ditch and coming to rest on the passenger side of the southbound lane.

The 29 year old driver of the truck was not wearing his seat belt and was thrown from the truck. He was taken to University Hospital but died later from those injuries.

Two other people riding in the truck a 28 year old female and an 8 year old boy were wearing their seat belts and escaped without any major injuries.

Police say drugs and alcohol were not involved high speed is a contributing factor  .

The resulting crash closed the highway in both directions for several hours, as police worked to determine the cause of this tragic crash. The investigation continues, but police believe that speed, and the seatbelt not being worn, played a major role in the crash that claimed a young man's life.

The highway was later reopened in both directions.

Police wish to remind the public that, not only is it an offence to not wear your seatbelt, but that seatbelts do save lives. Two people walked away from a crash that could have easily resulted in more than one death.

devestating to his spouse (I assume the lady is). Saw the police and ambulances and rescue truck passing me as I drove up the hart to deliver food last night.

What does it take for some people? AFAIC people who will not use their seatbelts are too stupid to qualify for a DL. This guy wasn't even as old as the seatbelt laws are! No excuse, none.
Car shows on TV often show people testing the latest vehicles not bothering to put on a seat belt and boating/fishing shows often show boaters merrily riding in their boats not wearing personal flotation devices.

It's probably a macho thing, although losing one's life puts an end to this kind of machismo, permanently.
Tough situation for the woman and boy. I feel bad for them. The man's worries are over, the other two will have to deal with the aftermath for who knows how long.
The driver should have known better.
