Here We Grow Again

Prince George, B.C.-  The Community Garden at 7th and Victoria has now been officially “opened” although the state of growth of some of the crops would indicate people have been busy tending to the garden for a while.

The Community Garden is the only one on private property in Prince George. The corner lot is owned by Integis Credit Union, and will one day be the site of a new mid-town banking centre.   Until the day that construction starts, it will be used as a community garden.    That is why the “planters” are portable, and could be moved to another site when Integris needs the property for its own construction project.

This year, there are more planters, and the harvest will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Anyone that says something negative about this project is an idiot.
The only thing negtative ive got to say is there arent enough of these..
Okay, I'll bite.

There is not enough green. It appears we are into wood chipping more than into veggy farming. We probably need more able bodied people to help.

Also, there is a large community garden on the northwest corner of Davie and Burrard in Vancouver. I saw it in full green a couple of weeks ago and was "knocked off my socks". It has no chain link fence around it.

Here is the link. Worth clicking on the video. Similar situation to here as far as a corporation waiting to build. Totally astounding to see the development quality difference to me.

Having an alternate point of view is not being negative. Without an alernative point of view we would still think that the world was flat.

I like the community garden concept, however we need a much bigger vegetable growing industry in Prince George. Part of the problem is, is that everyone buys from the big stores and a little guy cant make a buck.

Everything that used to be produced in this town has been moved out, along with the jobs. ie; Veekens Eggs, Dairyland, PG Bakery, etc; A lot of wholesalers have shut down, because you can deliver from Edmonton, Vancouver overnight. Order to-day, deliver to-morrow.

This concept works good for the Big Citys but not for us. We then become the centre for the Big Stores ie; Walmart, Cdn Tire, Cdn Superstore, Home Depot, etc; and we draw in the business from the outlying areas, and the small business's in those area's go broke. Such is life.

Have a nice day.
they should make this way bigger,pg has lots of land on the outskirts of town
Great news story. More is better but this is still to see.
This country was made to grow trees, not cabbage. Leave the veggies to the prairies and lowert mainland. The community garden is great idea but I fear it will fade away as vandals will make it a futile endeavor sooner or later. Now that was negative! Didn't want to disappoint chris.
Damn cold this morning, hope gardens didn't get frost.
Buying local is to expensive and considered a treat in my household. You hit the nail on the head Palopu about the local jobs been lost in this area. Such is life, and very sad.

Why wouldn't you build a fair size green house. A few 3'x6' grow boxes isn't going to produce nothing. We don't get the lower mainland weather to grow veg. outside, without being protected from our cooler elements. Otherwise nice try! Goodluck.
There is another community garden just starting out on private property… on the corner of Carney and Willow, spearheaded by the PG Christian Reformed Church, with research gardens developed in conjunction with UNBC. Food from this garden will go to the Salvation Army Food Bank and local families in the neighborhood.
