Its not the Olympics, but Prince George has landed an international event for 2010.

The 2010 World Winter Cities Association for Mayor's Conference will be held in P.G.  Our city   was selected over Qigihar China, a city  of  more than one milion people in northwestern China.

In its release to the media, City Hall expresses confidence the  conference will "pay substantial dividends as people from  around the circumpolar and northern world travel to Prince George in the days leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics."

Sign me up. Where do I rent space to sell tacky touristy junk to these unsuspecting folks. I smell a business opportunity.
The Board of Directors of the WWCAM is convened by the President every two years it is composed of a President 3 Vice Presidents 2 Directors and 1 Auditor. Our Mayor is one of the Vice Presidents. This Board of Directors is responsible for selecting host cities for the Mayors Conference. At this time the WWCAM consists of 12 Countries and 21 Cities. I city in Canada and 1 City in Anchorage Alaska. 7 Citys in China and the others spread around the world. This has been the approximate make up of the WWCAM since its inception in 1988, so unless they can increase their members dramatically between now and 2010 we can expect at the most 21 Mayors at the Conference in 2010 plus some associate members.. We shouldnt make too much out of this Conference as all the hoopla is so that the Mayor and his cohorts can justify spending all our money on this junket. Any number of gatherings at Masse Place Stadium would surpass this function.
One of the tidbits that came out before our Mayor went off to this conference was what a great deal it was for us as the host city picked up all the travel costs for those attending. Well in 2010 we are sure going to have a lot to pay for ! I sure hope we at least get the air miles from paying for all those tickets. This is nothing more than another junket for so called local officials who think they have a global influence but are not brave enough to run in the federal politics circle.

Mr. Mayor please stop trying to get people from the other side of the world to come here and lets see if we can get people from this side of the world to come here. That whole tourist train incident now that they are going to overnight in Quesnel is just another example of where we think that because PG is the major city in the North people will just come to us. Need to have something to draw them in, other than smell and a casino.
>Need to have something to draw them in, other than smell and a casino.<

Quesnel has the same smell, only much more concentrated! And it has a Casino, too!

There goes our "uniqueness" except that we have ten times more cracks and potholes in our undulating main streets (like Victoria Street, 20th Avenue) and not to forget First Avenue, where the train would disgorge the wide eyed tourists from the train!

Wide eyed because they didn't expect to see a General Motors vehicle torture track lined by decrepit warehouses next to an unsightly rail yard!
Did I miss something here?? Did our Mayor get the OK from our City Council to host this Conference in Prince George in 2010, if so, was there any mention of the cost., as I beleive that the host City Pays for the Accomodation and Transportation for the Members (I could be wrong) In any event if in fact the City of Prince George is picking up the tab, and even if it isnt, doesnt the Mayor need a motion to be passed by Council before he can make decisions that effect the running of and expenditures of this City?? I dont beleive that he can just travel around the World and invite people to our City and set up Conferences without the rest of the City Councillors being involved. If he can then why do we have Councillors. Does anyone know if this was passed by Council before the Mayor and his buddies left?? On another point. First he went to a conference, and was elected Vice President, Second time he went to the Conference and was elected Auditor, does this now mean, because he is the Auditor he must now attend the conference in Nuuk Greenland in 2008?? When will it stop??
