Prince Geoerge, B.C.- This is the  one weekend of the year that  you  can go fishing  for free in  most of  B.C.'s inland waters.

During B.C.'s Family Fishing Weekend, today through Sunday, residents of Canada can fish in most of B.C.'s thousands of lakes and streams, compliments of the provincial government and subject to the freshwater fishing regulations. The Family Fishing Weekend Society provides financial assistance, materials and guidance to volunteer groups who will be putting on family fishing events.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC helps by stocking more than 8 million fish into 900 lakes and streams each year, developing community fisheries, and delivering Learn to Fish programs.

Other organizations that contribute are The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, which supports the health and diversity of B.C.'s fish stocks and their habitat, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation, dedicated to the conservation and recovery of Pacific salmon.

There  is a special event  planned  at Fergons Lake on Sunday in Prince George,  while  in Quesnel, a special  event is  slated for Ten Mile Lake on Saturday.

For more details and a list of communities where family fishing events are being held, visit www.bcfamilyfishing.com online.

Although a basic licence is not required for residents of Canada over Family Fishing Weekend, licensing regulations for fishing on classified waters and for keeping special species and sizes of fish still apply. To make sure you're having fun within the rules, visit

That would be Ferguson Lake here in Prince George.

Should be lots of fun for the kids!
Free fishing "compliments of the provincial government." I didn't realize that they owned all the fish!
I don't believe that the family fishing weekend trumps the spring closures so actually most creeks and streams are still closed till june 30. make sure you check the regs.
Whatever happened to the proposal to build a fishing lake in the city (Rainbow Park)?

I didn't realize that they owned all the fish!

They don't, the people of Canada do. "They" are caretakers of the stocks on our behalf. "They" set thew rules and provide the enforcement to ensure that the resource is not abused or under too much (tumuch) pressure.

Personally I think this free family weekend is a bad idea. My reasoning is that there is already too much pressure on the fish stocks, our limits have been reduced due to stock levels. We don't need more people fishing.

I can see where this might encourage a conservation attitude and an appreciation for wild life and the wilderness. Surely there is another way to do so. There are still too many fisher folks and more bodies of water are becoming more accessible with more logging roads and so many ATV.
