Heritage Sign that will be  placed at site of former Strand Theatre

Prince George, B.C. - This morning, the City of Prince George unveiled  one of the 13  special heritage signs that will be placed throughout the downtown area of the City.
The sign   unveiled this morning was at  3rd and Quebec Streets in front of the  old post office on Third Avenue.

The signage  came as a recommendation from the Downtown Partnership ( formerly  Mayor's Task Force for a Better Downtown) and will see  similar signs  which  celebrate historical sites in Prince George,  set up  at  the following locations:

1. The Prince George Arena on 6th Avenue between Quebec Street and Dominion Street;
2. City Hall;
3. The Connaught Hill Ski Jump;
4. The Shasta Café on George Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue;
5. Mason’s Café at 3rd Avenue and Dominion Street;
6. The Strand Theatre at 3rd Avenue and Dominion Street;
7. The Post Office at 3rd Avenue and Quebec Street;
8. WD West Studios on 3rd Avenue between Brunswick Street and Quebec Street;
9. Northern Hardware at 3rd Avenue and Brunswick Street;
10. The Knox United Church at 5th Avenue and Brunswick Street;
11. Kresge’s at 3rd Avenue and Brunswick Street;
12. The Old Liquor Store at 6th Avenue and Dominion Street; and
13. The Corless House on 4th Avenue between Quebec Street and Dominion Street.

The funding for the signage  was made possible through a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities' Tourism funds to support Community Heritage.

The Downtown Heritage Educational Signs will serve as both a tourism attraction and a tool for local citizens to learn about and appreciate the City’s heritage.

This project is a partnership between the City of Prince George, the Heritage Commission, the Public Library and The Exploration Place, and complements the Public Library’s Downtown Heritage Walking Tour.

Ah, the Strand. Nothing like a pea shooter and a Saturday Matinee to make you feel alive. Good times...
Hmmmmm I wonder if the city is going to post up a sign at the OLD PG HOTEL or the Outrigger location.
Wonder how long before they are spray painted with gang signs.
Should put signs in front of all the schools that have closed.
Actually nothing like a pea shooter AT the Saturday Matinee to make you feel alive....hit one of the kids from the cache and you were as good as dead...tough crowd back in the day.
"back in the day"
Man, I really dislike that trendy talk.
But the kids from the Island Cache did have a rep. to live up to.
I too remember the Strand, the Princess, and Saturday matinees.

I wonder if they would mind if I put up a few signs downtown.

" This is where I got sick "
" this is where I got too tired to walk and passed out"

Or,

" is this how our tax money gets used "
what about the royal produces and the yip family or the golden spike cafe. maybe mention that the kresges site used to be the old swimming hole
the citizen newspaper site on quebec
any more enostalgia anyone
Maybe we should just put plaques into the sidewalks along 3rd and George like Rodeo Drive or like this plaque in Pittsburgh.

We'll have memories of things that used to be there for a while.

Then those can be followed up by the next generation with plaques that commemorate the plaques that used to be in the sidewalks when they grew up.

Of course, we really do not have anything quite as important as world series games. They MUST live on. Pea shooters in the back rows of a theatre .... way too common .. :-)
I thought the Kresge site was the location of the Alexandra Hotel that became the government building.
Dont forget Jimmy James Ice Cream and Candy shop around Wally West on Third Ave.,, and Mays Shop on George St., There was another cafe on George St., close to where the B&B Music is now. Cant remember the name.
On George St. Johnnys Supper Club, Spaners Mens Wear, the Mac, the Canada, the Astoria
the chrysler dealer, the chev. dealer and on and on.

Want more nostalgia? Google the Wally West online collection. More pics from back in the day...gotta rattle metalman's cage now and again:).
Good one Junco....Those were the days....I remember the balcony at the Princess...fun fun fun....
Good to see the city try to promote the city itself as a tourist attraction. Now lets see the independent businesses put their two cents worth to promote the city.
Hey! who's rattling my cage? Oh it's you Junco, no worries, it's all good, we old school back in the day types have to stick together. Cheers.
