Prince George, B.C. – The Dunster Community Association is exploring the possibility of establishing a non profit society that would take possession of the Dunster School of Fine Arts.
The school is one of several that is to be closed by School District 57, but Dunster area parents are trying to prevent having their children bussed to nearby McBride for the coming school year.
Regional District of Fraser Fort George Director Ken Starchuck says an engineer’s report says generally, the building is sound . The price tag attached to the building has not yet been made public, but the Ministry of Education has indicated the building can be sold to the Regional District or to a third party. The Dunster group is trying to find the means to develop a non-profit society and a business plan that can be presented to the School District 57 Board of Education before school starts this September.
That is a very tight time frame but the parents say they want to have their children attend the Dunster School this fall in order to have social and educational continuity.
On the weekend, parents who had been occupying the school since the last day of classes, gave up their occupation when served with a court order obtained by School District 57.

Good luck to the parents; it will be quite the task for the families of 26 or so kids to raise enough cash to run a school.
This would be an excellent experiment in community-based education. This partnership would allow the school district to continue doing the things it does well (provide teachers and curriculum) and would let them off the hook for the things it does poorly (leadership, financial planning, accountability, and sustainability). Good luck to the parents and the Dunster community.
