Cariboo-Prince George Mp Dick Harris and Minister for the Asia Pacific Gateway Stockwell Day announce funding for Canfor Pulp
Prince George, B.C.- Canfor Pulp has received $15.6 million dollars in funding from the Green transformation fund for two projects in Prince George which will reduce odour, and create green energy.
Federal Cabinet Minister Stockwell Day was on hand to deliver the good news, and told those in attendance to take a deep breath “What you can smell is sulphur, remember it, because once this new system is up and running you won’t be able to smell that anymore.”
The $11 million dollar odour reduction project is already underway at the P.G. Pulp and Intercon mills. A further $4.6 million will go towards energy production from black liquor. That project will create about 4 to 5 megawatts of power, enough to power 380 homes. That power will be sold to B.C. Hydro.
Canfor pulp has two more projects being developed to take advantage of the full $122 million dollars available to it under the Green Transformation fund. The company's other two projects will use up the balance of those funds and about $30 million more of the company's own money.
Canfor Pulp V.P of Operations, Brett Robinson says the project is very important not only to the community but to the Canfor Pulp employees “We have 700 employees at these two facilities, they live in this community so they are very excited about this ( odour reduction) project. When it is operational, it will reduce odour by 60%.”
The odour reduction project is expected to be in place early next year.
