Members of the Prince George Integrated Road Safety Unit and Fraser-Fort George Traffice Services set up a roadblock on Highway 97, near Salmon Valley, for several hours over the course of yesterday afternoon and evening...
RCMP Sergeant Gord Flewelling says six 24-hour suspensions were issued -- five for drug impairment (one was a large commercial vehicle) and one for liquor.
In addition, Sergeant Flewelling says six drug seizures were made and one person remains under investigation for breach of probation. 29 violation tickets were issued and two liquor seizures were made.
Flewelling says officers stopped approximately 3000 vehicles over the course of the 6.5-hour roadblock near Mitchell Road and Highway 97. He says, obviously, the drug infractions are alarming.
Flewelling says the Integrated Road Safety Unit was a province-wide initiative announced in November of 2004 and the Prince George unit consists of seven members charged with reducing the crash and death rate on area roads and targetting the main causes of those crashes -- drugs and alcohol.
Solicitor-General John Les is slated to be in Prince George at the start of next month to announce a new province-wide initiative to that end.
Meantime, road checks will continue throughout the Regional District.

To the lady officer who was asking me a few questions , I want to say thanks.
You were very nice, and met me at my window with a smile and a cheerful voice.
The traffic was backed up a long ways, and it added probably 20 minutes to my drive, so I was not thrilled when i realized it was a roadblock....but if i am going to be stopped, it was nice that the person doing so was sweet and happy !
I also am glad that the recent one reported about here was a success in getting impaired drivers off the roads.
