Hartley Miller's Slap Shots July 16th, 2010

There have been some nasty break ups in the sports world, but perhaps none as “ugly” as the Lebron James/Cleveland Cavaliers separation.

Has there ever been a quicker hero turned villain scenario than when James, the self-proclaimed “KING”, announced, on national television, that he is leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat?

In order to capture the magnitude of this change, it is important to make a comparison. If this was the WWE, James went from “FACE” to “HEEL” in a quick moment. In the past, this was known as “good guy” to “bad guy” however, times in the wrestling entertainment business have certainly changed.

Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert did not hide his bitterness by making several “parting shots” that were posted on the Cavaliers website shortly after Lebron made his proclamation. He was fined $100,000 for his rant.

Like any city, Prince George has had its share of splits:

  • P.G. Cougars owner Rick Brodsky was livid when Coach Stan Butler resigned just one year into the job.
  • Stewart Malgunas and Ed Dempsey appeared to be close while coaching together with the Cougars and later the P.G. Spruce Kings. However, Malgunas took the high road when he unexpectedly left the Spruce Kings as Dempsey’s assistant over an apparent philosophical difference.
  • More recently, Len McNamara’s departure as Athletics and Recreation Coordinator from UNBC was not exactly a celebration between the two sides.
  • It may not be a traditional sport, but I doubt there was a nastier divorce in Prince George than when CKPG went on the power play and unceremoniously dismissed Meisner after more than 25 years of yeoman service.
  • The animosity involving rival local boxing coaches Bob Pegues and Wayne Sponagle became so tense that the courtroom acted as their so-called ring of honor.

There are many more local examples, but these break-ups pale in comparison to some of the better-known nasty scraps by famous athletes:

  • Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers: Wow! This one still lingers on. When Favre was traded to the New York Jets, there definitely was a sense of bitterness, but a year later, when Favre signed with divisional rival, Minnesota, then the animosity between Favre and management ventured into unchartered territory. The good news is the final chapter remains unwritten.
  • Tiger Woods and swing coach Butch Harmon: 10 years together but it sure looked like Woods would rather have a “swinging” coach than a swing one. Actually, the Tiger and Butch divorce was pale in comparison to Tiger and soon to be ex wife Elin.
  • Shaq and Kobe: Batman and Robin became Batman and the Penguin, Batman and the Riddler or even Batman and the Joker. LA was not big enough for both of those egos after they won three titles together. One had to leave and that was Shaq. Kobe stayed behind and after trailing 4-3 has come back to take what might be an insurmountable 5-4 lead in the all important “ring” count.
  • Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb: The best of friends until T.O. jabbed McNabb in the media. He even questioned McNabb’s performance in the only Super Bowl game they played together. Wait, there could be more. Yes, since no team appears interested in giving Owens another chance, T.O. has suggested Washington would be a good fit since it would re-unite him with McNabb. You have to be kidding.
  • Brian Burke and Kevin Lowe: These two were so friendly to each other that Lowe actually helped Burke win a Stanley Cup in Anaheim when he dealt Chris Pronger from the Oilers to the Ducks. That gratefulness did not last as the verbal diarrhea publically between the two became so detrimental to the league that Commissioner Gary Bettman had to step in to end the nonsense.
  • These aforementioned break ups are just the tip of the iceberg. There is Joe Torre and the New York Yankees, Roger Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee, Jose Canseco and his ex bash Brother Mark McGwire, Jennifer Jones and her long time ex third Cathy Overton-Clapham, and let us not forget Wayne Gretzky, the Phoenix Coyotes, and their former owner Jerry Moyes. Even tennis great Chris Evert is not on speaking terms with her former love, golfer Greg Norman.

These are just a few examples of virtually hundreds and thousands of sports break-ups. I am sure you have your own favorites. It certainly is not healthy to hold grudges.  We should all strive to subscribe to the old adage of letting bygones be bygones.

Pardon the pun, but I doubt if anyone will ever take as much HEAT as Lebron for his debacle, and the criticism he received from the Cavaliers fans, which was spearheaded by the team’s owner.

From the Quote Rack:

“Despicable Me” was the top box office film of the weekend. Don’t go jumping to conclusions; it is NOT the animated story of LeBron James moving to Miami.

The LeBron James 'Decision Night' situation has featured an American superstar and icon that showed a questionable judgment along with a large ego that may ultimately do strong damage to his career. But enough about the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

LeBron James' one-hour special on ESPN so devastated the city of Cleveland that it will be rebroadcast on the Weather Channel as part of Disaster Week.

For seven years, Cleveland considered LeBron James a model citizen. Now, they consider him a Modell citizen.

Cleveland Cavalier fans are in a depressed mood. Not only did they wake up and realize it wasn’t a dream that LeBron James is going to Miami, they also had to deal with the fact they are still living in Cleveland.

Workers in Cleveland dismantled a ten story high mural of LeBron James after his announcement to go to Miami. Just like that, the picture was reclassified from art to vandalism.

A report says that LeBron James could bring millions of dollars in tourism to Miami. The hardest part will be convincing the Miami restaurants to stay open after 4:00 PM.

Lebron said he wanted to thank the man above... Pat Riley
Quick... is this too much for a comic book ? Lebron, Chris and Dwayne signed in Miami to team up and plug the BP oil spill in the Gulf before the tar balls land on South Beach.

Jesse Jackson says that an owner who paid over $120 million to a player is making comments like a slave owner? Now wait a cotton picking minute...

Lebron James along with his friends have done the impossible. First Lebron may have taken Kobe Bryant’s spot as the most hated basketball player outside his hometown. Second, can anyone remember a national sports story in July about super-egos and the rich getting richer in sports…and the Yankees aren’t even involved?

Apparently, “The Decision” had higher television ratings than the Lebron James’ last playoff game with the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Celtics. Makes sense, during the ESPN special, Lebron actually seemed like he wanted to be there.

Regarding ESPN’s “the Decision,” Lebron James may have set a record – for the most damage a public figure could do to his reputation in an hour while still keeping his pants on.

Judging by the Miami jersey numbers of Dwayne Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, looks like the Heat pulled off a 1-6-3 triple play.

Fathead LLC, the company held by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, has slashed the prices of its LeBron memorabilia down to exactly $17.41. As in the birth year of Benedict Arnold.

The only thing I find more disturbing than Lebron James leaving Cleveland is his cavalier attitude towards the fans. If Lebron ends up being the third most important player on the Heat, will he be known as Lebronze?
Comedy writer Marc Ragovin of New York

Betty White's new show Hot in Cleveland airs on Wednesdays. It is not to be confused with Thursday's Lebron James airing of Not in Cleveland.

And in case you missed it:

It has been a tough time for Cleveland sports fans, years ago, the Cleveland Browns left for Baltimore, now LeBron James leaves for Miami, and, worst of all, the Cleveland Indians won't leave at all.
