Prince George, B.C. – While the Baldy Hughes Treatment Centre and Therapeutic Community has been given $500 thousand dollars from the Ministry of Health for capital expenditures, there is still no funding attached to patient care .
Helath Mininster Kevin Falcon praised the staff and residents of Baldy Hughes for their achievements so far, but fell short of saying theProvince will provide funding for the treatment, at least no funding at this time.
“I know there is an academic third party review of the treatment that has gone on here at Baldy Hughes, and I am waiting for that report" says Falcon, "It seems to suggest they have had good results in this approach, so I am interested in seeing that, I understand it will be ready soon. I think, I’ve always been a Minister who is guided by the evidence and if the evidence shows this program as being effective, which I believe it does, then we’re going to support it.”
“It is important for people who are addicted to be able to come to environments where they are away from all the outside influences”, said Marshall Smith, Executive Director of Baldy Hughes. That is one of the secrets to the success of Baldy Hughes, it’s remoteness means resident have a very long walk into town to find a substance to abuse.
Former resident and addict Dale Restler stood behind the microphone prior to the cheque presentation for thenbui8lding upgrades and was overwhelmed by the attention “I haven’t had this much attention since the police found something in the trunk of my car in Calgary.” He talked about his path of addiction and how it lead him to spend six years in another “gated” community ( jail) in Washington, That didn’t do me any good, but the intense therapy and length of stay here at Baldy Hughes has changed my life. I wanted a new life, and I started a new life, I owe everything to Baldy Hughes, this is a piece of Heaven.”
Baldy Hughes owes its success to community support says Minister Falcon, as so many members of the Prince George community are offering whatever assistance they can to see the residents succeed. Some of the residents are now employed at RONA, Art Knapps and Canadian Tire while others are working within the Baldy Hughes community itself building new cabins, a new greenhouse, landscaping, or developing their culinary skills in the kitchen.
