Prince George, B.C.-  On August 9th, folks in Prince George can ride the bus for free.

The City will lose $1200 in revenue that day, but it is all part of the effort to land the bid for the 2015 Winter Games.

The Bid Evaluation Committee will be in Prince George  that day and to show  community support for the bid,  residents are being asked to take part in numerous events.

As a proactive way to encourage greater attendance at events, reduce vehicle congestion, increase safety for pedestrians and reduce vehicle emissions, the City decided it would be  a good idea to offer  free transit on that day.

Let's cheer on the opportunity to sacrifice $1200 in revenue to garner support for putting out millions to host another athletic event that will cost us millions.
Will this "put Prince George on the map"? Our air pollution and rampant crime have already done that.

I'm SummerSoul and this is just SummerSoul's opinion.
So long as you don't want to get anywhere or if you really don't need to get to nowhere in a timely fashion free transit will be awesome.
So tell me,

1. what are the free events
2. where are they
3. when do they start and end
4. where is the nearest bus stop
5. what are the routes I can take from my place to get there?
6. what is the frequency of the bus
7. when can I catch the bus?

Maybe there will be a special page on the city web site that will tel me when the next bus is when I put in my postal code?

And maybe there will be a special page in both newspapers of what the events are and how I can get there from my place.

That will come out when? August 8th?
twelve hundred bucks? Thats it? Hardly worth having a bus service for that little amount of cash IMO.
We wont be able to ride for free anyway, because the Mayor, Council, City Staff, Service Clubs, and Downtown organizations, plus other high profile members of the community will be fighting for seats on the bus.

We know that these people always lead by example. We see them on the busses every day. Or do we??
haha we wont find out about events untill Aug 10.....just the way PG rolls;)
what a complete and utter waste of taxpayers money.but i guess they can allways up the rates for garbage collection to offset it. ten bucks every time you go to a transfer station sounds cheap. sure am glad they saved all that money on the new garbage collection system
Here we are at the brink of one of the greatest events for our City and we have all this cynicism. Any one interested in a protest?

“Go Kamloops and Kelowna go”.
Cheers
PS : And Gus, if your going to ride the bus stop whining and get a schedule of times and routs at City Hall.
"One of the greatest events for our City"
Not a chance. A total waste of tax payer's money. There are way more important uses for that money and it shouldn't be spent to watch a bunch of people skate around a rink using MY money.
Had no problem finding a bus schedule and route online. I guess it's easier for some people to whine and moan.
"And Gus, if your going to ride the bus stop whining and get a schedule of times and routs at City Hall."

Only mildly helpful. My whole route only has six stops showing in the schedule so I have to guess when the bus comes. There's no way to know where the closest stop to anything is because even the website doesn't list all the stops, so you could walk one way down the street to get to a stop only to find out later that there was a stop in the other direction much closer.

It's impossible to know where to get off the bus if you are riding for the first time, unless you are disembarking somewhere major like Pine Center or something. Just two days ago I went somewhere new. Got off at the stop I thought was the closest only to see the bus stop again right outside the place I was going. I got to walk up a big hill for no reason. No big deal for me, but definitely a nuisance for people who are new to the system.

I really wish they would go with a Translink-style schedule online at least. You can select any stop on any route so you know exactly where to get on and off and have a better idea of timing.
