The newly paved westbound lanes of University Way

Prince George, B.C. -  The city's road paving projects have gone well this summer --coming in under-budget and freeing up enough cash to take on a project that had been slated for next year...

The road rehabilitation budget was a record amount of nearly $3.4-million dollars this year for 13 projects, after Council approved two measures in the 2010 budget that bolstered the amount of money available by almost three-quarters of a million dollars.

The City's Supervisor of Technical Services, Mick Jones, says, "Right now, we're still assessing the numbers, but we know that it will be in excess of $290-thousand dollars."

Jones says the money will be used to re-pave a 1.9-kilometre segment of University Way from the Shane Creek Bridge to Tyner Boulevard.  The asphalt milling will begin tomorrow, with paving set for Tuesday.

"And, once this project is complete, we'll assess the numbers again," he says.  "And we're hoping to have a little bit left but it won't be enough for a larger significant project -- it may be enough to do a small overlay some where or some patching."

I have seen an improvement in roads and pothole filling this year. Although small, it is an improvement.
I moved here in 2001 and started my work trips up and over University way. Since that time I have had to dodge potholes, potlines ( whatever you call it when a whole bunch of pot holes line up to make a long strip of them ) on a daily basis and frequent dodging from one side to another to avoid another pot hole. It is nice to finally be able to go up the hill be treated like how a road should be.

Hopefully sometime they can do the other side, or maybe that will be in 9 years time :)
Those breakdowns of pavement as you describe them should actually not be happening. They are a sign of improper paving in the first place and should have been caught at the time they were done and he contractor required to repave.

I think we have far too many of such instances in this community.
I question the quality of road bed underneath the asphalt in many places as well.
Time for Ospika , you guys. Starting anywhere again would be fine with me.
I completely agree with gus.
university way was smooth compared to ospika. who asseses these roads and decides on what roads to do? there are alot worse roads out there compared to univeristy way. the city needs to revamp there selection process.
ospika was paved north of 15th but could use some more by rainbow park
These pot holes cause accidence, people are to busy swerving to miss them, as to not wreak the vehicle and lose a kidney, not watching traffic. I travel allot, these roads are the worst, don't give me the excuse we live in the north, I've been north and roads are fine. Something is very wrong.
Oh I agree with you get-with-it. For summer vacation just finished driving all the way back to Manitoba visiting various friend and relatives along the way and didn't encounter a single other city with as bad of roads as ours. Sure the occasional bad stretch, but not as prevalent as ours are.
ditto what gus said - it seems odd & looks like there is either a problem with the road base not being constructed properly for the loads driven on these roads or the pavement mix isn't up to where it should be.
Jones says the money will be used to re-pave a 1.9-kilometre segment of University Way from the Shane Creek Bridge to Tyner Boulevard.

But University Way is our pride and joy. Look at all the trees and nice brick work just west of Highway#16. They even installed sprinklers to keep it nice and green.

A Street light was kncked down a number of years back on the median near the bottom of the Ospika hill. This Lamp standard has never been replaced.

Unless we start to make changes at City Hall the inefficiencys will continue.
Cheers
