Sawmill For the Northwest?

Logs piled in a sorting yard in Terrace
Terrace, B.C.- While the logs pile up in Terrace, the Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, says there is work underway to try and get a sawmill opened in that region.
Currently, logs are piled at a yard in the west end of Terrace, then shipped by truck to Prince Rupert. Bell says most of the logs will be barged to mills in the lower mainland for processing. He admits some may be shipped offshore, but monthly totals of raw log exports have fluctuated between 7 and 9% of total lumber exports from the whole Province, so it is difficult to pinpoint the exports from this one site.
According to Bell, only the lower quality logs are being shipped to China.
But with the volume of logs being shipped to other mill sites, there may be a case for a mill to be developed in the Terrace area “I believe there should be a sawmill in the northwest” says Bell, “A lot of work has been done, and there’s lots more to be done to make that happen.” Bell says it is more cost effective to ship produced lumber than to ship raw logs.
